Purchased new Kioti CK20 last month and picked up new 48" Howse Rotary Cutter today. Got it home and unloaded, went to read operators manual before operation and noticed on first page that front and rear chain guards are standard equipment on all rotary cutters. There were no chain guards on this cutter. Was it my responsibility to ask the dealer for these as a add on option? Or does Howse actually sell cutters without something that they call standard equipment in the operators manuel. Last, do I go back and ask the dealer if they were not installed by mistake? Every picture in the manual shows all cutters with the chains installed.

I guess it depends on what you model you bought. According to their website they sell them both ways. All of the ones with chains have a C in the model number, as in 400C and 400DC. If it doesn't have the C, then no chains are included as in 400 or 400D.

Hope that helps.

There has been some discussion regarding rotary cutting and the need for chain guards here on TBN. For commercial operators it is a must for liability reasons. For residential operators it is a different liability issue. When I approached my local dealer to acquire chain guards they thought (as they continue to think) that I am a little :eek:.
As the other posters suggested it is an option and the dealer generally has to order each chain guard part separately if it is not already "packaged" as a "kit". Jay

With Howse, and I believe all other makers as well, the chain guards are an odd-on option that you usually have to specify unless the particular unit you're looking at just happens to already have them installed.

I bought mine without guards but then just simply bought them and put them on myself. You can get them from the dealer or (where I got mine) from Northern Tool..........

Howse Rough Cut Mower — 3-Point, Category 1, 4ft. Length | Category 1 Attachments | Northern Tool + Equipment

I think they are very good to have and will slow down a lot of high-speed debris being flung around under the cutter.

Wondering if that was just the front chain guard? Do they have a rear chain gaurd also? I purchased my rotary cutter through TSC and it came withou guards and can be ordered.

I bought a five footer recently, rear chain guard only. It incessantly clogs with brush and twigs. If I'm ever presented with the options of "chains" or "no chains" in the future - I'm gonna leave the chains in the store.

For some 'residential' protection on the cheap.. you can make rubber guards out of truck mudflaps and angle iron.. they work fairly decently. A couple big makes.. like JD even used rubber guards on some of their mowers though with current liability issues .. it looks like everybody is now going chain especially for comercial applications.

I've bought one new Bush Hog and one new Howse rotary cutters. Neither came with chain guards, although I built my own after seeing how far some dangerous debris can be thrown by one of those things. I know one John Deere dealer told me they didn't stock or sell any rotary cutters without the chain guards, but apparently most dealers do.

@WayneB

When I got mine from them it came as a complete set front and rear guards. You're right, NT isn't specific here but the price seems about the same as what I paid for the complete set. With the price of steel, who knows?

Might need to ring 'em up and double check.
