I've never been in a position to drop the coin on a good saw, but I have done really well by getting Oregon's Professional series chains for my two Craftsmans. I use the VXL series chain, and the difference between it and the stock chain is night and day. The stock chain I am rocking the saw back and forth to cut faster. The Oregon VXL chain cuts like a hot knife through butter. I simply let the weight of the saw control the speed. My buddy sharpened up his Stihl and we both cut through the same log at the same time, and my saw beat his by a good bit. The key is low kickback chain (stock) vs non-low kickback. I have to mail order the VXL chains, as no one carries them around me. They are $13 a piece at Amickssuperstore.com, so I buy 3 for $40 and I'm set for a few seasons. I figure when my Craftsmans give up the ghost, I'll be at the Stihl dealer. Can your wife call my wife?!!!
