Several years ago the state of Tenn. decided to put you Ss number right under your address on your drivers lic. A year of bellaching from a lot of people, finally got them to take it off the next year. I had ground mine off with a dremil tool previous to that. Tdot also does a lot of silly things on the hyways here.

By law, the only thing a SSN can be used for is Social Security. I've no idea if that law has been amended or changed in the last 60 years.
However, too many companies and other entities require use of an SSN for things unrelated to Social Security. To me, this isn't a good thing.

lots of insurance co's used your social as your policy number till HIPPA got tight..

Good to know as those 4 numbers are the one's showing on my statements. I had a hard time convincing the bank to take the entire number off. I told them I knew it , but someone reading my mail would find it pretty quick, and set me up for troubles..

i know our payroll software at work has a way to disclude the S# if you check the correct boxes before printing.. etc.

I've heard of that practice but never looked into it. Turns out the cashier did the right thing.

Kinda makes you wonder about someone's sanity at Mastercard, doesn't it? They say that way the merchant can compare the signature on the card and the one of the sales receipt. In the first place, very few police officers are handwriting experts enough to do that, and in the second place, my signature on something sitting here at my desk, with my are resting on the desk, is not even close to comparable to one I scribble on a merchant's receipt.

Then, of course, the gas pumps don't know whether that card is signed or not, neither do any of the places you order from on the Internet.

The last time I ordered checks was 6 years ago when we bought this house, so I figured I ought to have some checks with our current address on them.:laughing: So, yep, ours have our name, address, and phone number on them. And I've already written 15 checks in the last 3 years. Most were to the county tax collector for vehicle registration (license plates).
