Torque gets it rolling, HP keeps it moving.

I have a Ecoboost as does my father and uncle. None of us get close to those numbers. Mine has 3.73 gears and dads and uncles have 3.55

I get 21ish freeway, 17 town. I get between 9 and 16 towing. 9 is 10,400#, 16 car haul trailer with building materials.
They get 23ish freeway, 19 town.

Chris

Thank you for pointing out my error, I was referring to the Dodge Eco diesel, not Eco boost. Haven't heard much good about the ecoboost, sorry. I was hoping to hear better reports because I was going to buy one.

That makes more sense.

At least the success of these 2 trucks has forced Ford's hand and bringing back the Ranger.

You're preaching to the choir. My post you quoted was 100% sarcasm. I love having a diesel choice in a pickup (any brand)-especially a smallish one. Now if they'd just add a manual transmission option I'd be set.

Ahhh, thanks. Yup totally missed the sarcasm part. I agree 100%. There sre some folks that will never be won over. Some ALWAYS believe the gassers are more "efficient" but I relate efficiency as MPG and ability to do work. I have owned and driven gas trucks since 1969. I now drive diesel. My GMC 2500 will pull more than any combination of trucks I have ever owned and get better mileage when doing it, AND when empty. The ONLY truck that even came close to it in mileage was a 1975 Datsun, with a 2.0L gasser. That was 19-20 MPH highway, if i kept it at about 60 mph. Admittedly it was a 4 speed manual (no overdrive) so it would have probably done better with a 5 spd, but they were not even offered then. Toyota came out with their 5 spd in either '75 or '76, not sure.

A friend we RV with that lives in Fresno, has been and still is a Ford man. He used to own an F250 with the 6.2 and many times made the claim to me he didn't need a diesel's power or expense. Well, a month ago he changed his mind and now own a 2015 F250SD with the 6.7 Powerstroke.

They came down our way a couple weeks ago and I asked him how he liked the new diesel. He said it was like the trailer wasn't back there. Keep in mind we have traveled with them to Oregon, through the mountains, and he ALWAYS got left behind in the hills.

Coming this was from Fresno, there are some decent grades on highway 41 south, not mountains like the Rockies or the higher Sierras, but a few long 6% grades. He told me he put it on cruise at 60mph and it never changed gears once, up or downhill. He got 11.3 on the trip down, with a brand new engine. His 5th wheel is also a 35ft, weighing about 12,500. His best with the 6.2 was 9 mpg and he said it was constantly hunting for the right gear.

As for the Eco Diesel, Ram wanted mileage first, I am convinced, and towing power second. Still in my mind a 4.0 is ideal for a 1/2 ton (sorry but I thing a 5.0 is overkill) and a 3.0 for the lighter trucks. With todays technology a 4.0 diesel could easily produce power numbers of 300hp and 450lbft of torque, and have room to grow. That would out perform any gas engine combo there is on the market today.

Folks tend to think horsepower makes torque, but it's the other way around. Hp comes from rpm*torque/5252. Modern diesel do not have the old 2400 rpm limits they used to have. More and more are approaching the 5000 rpm limit. Higher RPM doesn't make more horsepower, it does lengthen the power curve though.

Are they?

I was going to post links but just google it. There are many sources now that are pointing towards 2017. Bronco too!

Wow, I had not heard that. Looks good in the picture Car and Driver shows. I do think this size truck makes a lot of sense for me as long as it can tow 7000 to 8000 lbs.

There is no such thing as a 2.0, 2.8 and 3.0 Duramax . They are just a Fiat diesel built by VM Motori of Itally . Pasta and tomato sauce

What are you blabbing about? The 2.8 coming to the US is designed and built by GM. It's manufactured in a GM plant in Thailand. Not to be confused with the VM 2.8 that has been in foreign-destined Colorados for years.

F.I.A.T. = Fix It Again Tony.
What a coincidence that the Vm Motori also shares the same bore and stroke of 94 X 100 with the A428 as the " 2.8 Duramax" engine? The R425 VM Motori 2.5 also shares the same bore and stroke as the " GM Duramax 2.5L with 92 X 94.

The Canyon's 2.8L diesel is copy of an Italian VM Motori engine by Fiat. Built under license in a 3rd world country.
