Good thing you didn't dig that trench that cut the phone lines. Did they call before digging and have the lines located? Where they marked correctly or was this a total surprise that they where there? Any idea if they where fined for cutting the lines and what the repair cost? That's always such a huge fear of mine, even when just digging a footing for a fence post at a clients home.

Eddie,

Yes, I know I don't have that kind of equipment. But they did have Miss Dig out to mark. They marked one phone line but they were about 2 ft apart, so yes it was a surprise. They happened to find the dead one first and then pull the hoe right through the second live one. Since it was marked and they found a line I don't think they were fined. The Power Company and the Phone Company probably have some reciprocal agreement.

With SIP Panels, the OSB is the support and has to transfer the load to the truss. So trusses had to be full length. This required us to cut and trim out the spaced between each truss. A real pain but necessary. I built a jig to align the support backing for each side.

Here is the section showing the load bearing detail.

Rain coming today. Have to try and preserve the OSB flooring by covering. Not sure if it will make a difference but we shall see. Keeps a lot of water out of the garage.

Yesterday was a day to dry out. Today full steam ahead with building interior support walls for the roof trusses.

Coming along nicely. Yes, that is windows to an interior stairwell. It is for getting natural light into my office and 1/2 bath from the awning window in the stairwell. Expensive way of doing it but also will provide some airflow through the office.

I did not know this. For some reason, I always thought there was something other then foam inside those panels. So all the weight of the roof is held up by the strength of the foam and two sheets of OSB?

Had to go to Vegas for a company meeting however, the build must go on. The roof and gable sheeting along with structural and tie in 2xs arrived ready for the roof build.

The roof trusses are big, too big for any of my equipment or even equipment I could rent locally. My bride does not want me on the 7/12 pitches because she wants the rest of the build done and if I should fall or get injured we won't make the cold weather deadline. So we hired the trusses and roof out. The crew readies and steadies the build to accept the trusses and the roof structure. We decided on conventional roof in place of SIPs as we did not want 7/12 cathedral ceilings and would require to build an interior sub structure for 4/12 cathedral ceiling and the same for flat ceiling areas. We will use cellulose in the attic for 60R value and should be just fine.

The trusses were scheduled to arrive last week while I was in Vegas. I made several phone calls concerned that I had a crew and a crane scheduled to be there on the 22nd. The plant is backed up due to the high volume of building going on in Michigan this year. They assure me they will be delivered on the 22nd by 9:00AM so we push-on with the plan.

DSC01059.jpg

9:00AM comes and goes, the crew has been here since 6:00AM preparing the site. The Crane arrived at 8:00AM and got all of the sheeting and 2Xs where they were needed up on the deck. Now we wait. I continue to call. Finally, 1:30 the trusses show up. Whew! The crane and crew is now here for the entire day and putting the budget out of whack, I will have to do some negotiating with the truss company.

Eddie,

Yes, The OSB is the support for the entire wall. The only reason for 2Xs in the wall is for connections and nailers as well as jack and king studs for windows and doors. https://portersips.com/downloads/Florida%20Solar%20Energy%20Center_Final%20Report.pdf

2:00PM the first trusses are lifted into place. That first truss was the one that had to be altered to allow for the additional height mistake on the north wall. Everything looks good and is lining up nicely. Another bullet dodged.

The crew applies the sheeting prior to lifting the truss into place. I never would have thought of this. #alwayslearning Glad I am not doing it.

2:20PM Last of the cathedral trusses going in. Will start on the flat ceiling trusses next.
