I have no walk in type door on mine.I installed a 9ft grage door. My floor is 3/4 tongue and groove (I don't know why I used this for the floor) Mine is built on 4x6 treated skids like the portable buildings .

Thanks all! I was planning on building it on top of the skids and as low to the ground as possible. The reason I was going with wood floor is because I have 6 sheets of 3/4 tongue and groove from another project and it was free... I also have plenty of 2x6's to frame the floor. The bigger 12x16 is a good idea. I don't have any restrictions other than money. I need be able to do it all on my own especially since I just had to come out of pocket with $4500 for a new well. That killed the projects for the year.

I also put 4" x 4"s under it when I put it together.
It is in the background in this picture

Three of my smaller out buildings and my New shop are all framed up, 16 OC with trad framing methods, My new Aviary that i attached a coop to is build like a pole barn, This method saved me a lot of lumber and a lot of time, and if done right is very strong. I use Rough cut board and batten for my sidings, I'll be siding my New one Tom. I would go as big as you can, Unless you have the room and like the look of multiple buildings. Myself I enjoy the old farm look with multiple buildings so that is what I am doing here, Every year I tend to add another out building somewhere on my property, These are not just thrown together I try and make them all presentable. You should get and idea of what you want the building to look like then we could help you from there.

Here is my shop that I am working on now ( also working avairy and coop also )

Hi! If I were to do it, I would build a 16X20 two story. Shop upstairs with heat. 12X12 will fill quick.
I'm just saying!

What will a 12' by 12' like this cost for materials? I have been thinking of building a shed like this for my wife's garden stuff. The 12' by 16' sound appealing as well but is that getting too big for a small shed?

The Aviary I am building right now is 16x20x9 and the attached coop is 8x10x8. In this project I have about $800. in Lumber, avaiary does not have a wood floor ( the aviary is set up so down the road I can add a floor metal roof and siding and I'll have a nice size garage, I could fit a car or tractor and other stuff no problem ) I framed it with 2X8 lumber for upper and lower frame, and I also used 2x6 and 2x4, the reason I framed it heavy is beacuase I framed it like you would a pole barn, You use less Lumber but should be heaveier lumber, If I was to side the Aviary it self I would ad a few more supports, The coop part is getting board and batten like the rest of the out buildings, My friend owns a large saw mill business so I can't comment on the board and batten since I get it for free most of the time.

16x20 Is a nice size, Bigger is always better, 12x12 would make a nice garden shed, Of course if it just a garden shed you could o a touch smaller.

What type of siding? A pole building with metal siding would go up quickly and last a life time. A floor could still be built inside. 12x12 on skids sounds like it might move. I recommend narrower if it will go down the road.

Yes more details of what type of building and siding you would like to use, roof style and all of that, You could frame it and add a floor later if money is tight.

Thanks for all the comments so far. I am still trying to decide on style and type. I am on 13 acres of land but only about an acre is for the house. The shed will sit back from the house a good ways and the back and left side will be part of my dog pin. I plan on putting a small porch on the back in the fenced in area just to sit and play with the dogs so there will be a door in the back. The plan is also to have a place I can let them in when it is too cold for staying in the dog house. I am thinking swing doors in the front and a window on each side. I don't want a loft but I think a gabled roof is the way I will go to allow for over head storage. I am guessing this will start to equate to a mini barn style structure.
