Booger wore a harness until June, since last Oct. when he got bit on the neck. It looked goofy on him.

a generic collar nearly every dog/cat may have. i have found, is a pain, and prefer to use a "harness" front 2 legs go through some holes

I won't quote the whole thing but I have to say, great post boggen! Lots of good advice and must have taken some time to type all of that in, so big ups to you.

This little lady (Sally) has been doing patrol duty on the farm for over 6 years now and she still has lots of milage left, but the coyotes are like flies around here (only spot them from time to time, but they are howling most nights and their scat is common to find) so I thought it might help her to have some backup.

This is Pepper. As you can tell she isn't very intimidating yet, since she can't fight her way out of a pair of underwear, but soon enough she will be barking at squirrels and making her presence known. Any family unit looking for a quick meal may consider a lone border collie like Sally, but two dogs is a lot more likely to convince them to keep on trucking and search out some tasty road kill instead. :)

Zing,

I'm sure those 2 will do a GREAT job of keeping out the unwanted critters ! ! ! Between our Chow / Healer mix and the Mini Doxi, we don't have ANY critters in the back yard.

Since my big girl ( 140 / 150 pounds ) passed away a few months ago. I decided it was time for a new big dog.
Well the biggest dog in jail / pound was 76.4 LBS, still young & may grow a little more.
He is strong & pulls on the leash so hard it hurts your hands & wrist.
First problem, he did not want to get in the truck. After a while I got the young man at the shelter to stuff him in.
Once the engine was started & truck started moving he settled right down. Over 75 miles home & he did fine, just laid there & licked my hand once in a while. When we got home he was very content to stay in the truck.
Girls ( Mother & daughter - Bobby & Brat ) greeted him & every thing was fine. When he came out, freedom was overwhelming to him. He ran in every direction exploring most everything & playing with the girls.

Did I mention that he had just be 'Fixed" and is wearing a cone. Now that is some what of a problem, as it kept smacking the girls. Didn't take them too long to get tired of that. So now they are not to happy with him. Damm another 10 days of it, & I'm tired of it too, as he runs by it hits me in the legs.

pound though he was a Rottweiler / hound mix, but he was picked up as a stray & it's all just a guess. Has a rottweiler face & hound like ears, just a little shorter.

He is smart & learns quick (If he wants to). Named him "Little Boy", in about an hour or less he knew his name. Sort of understands "No" if spoken very forceful.
Almost has Move figured out, just takes a little push to get him started. He is quite loving & wants to put his head in my lap, don't work out too well with the cone.

Sort of think owners loved him as a puppy & when he got big threw him out. Spoiled & no training.

Any & All advice is welcome. THANK YOU

Crash,

Just be patient and give him plenty of LOVE ! ! The advice the other posters have given you is all very good. Be consistent, patient, and reward good behavior. I'm sure the two of you will have many wonderful years together. :2cents:

Clicker training! You cannot SPOIL a dog! The direct path to thier brain is through the stomach And it only takes the suggestion!

You never need to raise your voice if you mean it when you say it softly.

What a difference a day makes. "little Boy" has calmed down so much, it's hard to believe.
He walks beside me, stops when I stop. Even calmer when being hand fed.
Understands "No". Still having a little trouble with "Move", just needs a slight nudge.
When not exploring he lays out side the door waiting for me to come out. Has quit trying to run in or jump up on me.

Have not used a leash or not yelled at him.

Question???
I have been thinking of removing his funnel after 7 days. Your Thoughts & / or suggestions.
Thank You.

I forgot to mention my feeding schedule. It works for me.
Fill up 3 bowls at least once a day. Dogs eat all they want when they want. Even the new Boy has adopted. Still feed left after 24 hours.
Mother "bobby" who needs to gain weight only eats what she wants. "Brat" is husky, but not at all fat. New Boy needs to put on a few pounds, so I hope he eats a little more.

I do give them food treats, hamburger, chicken without bones & so on. But don't use it as a reward.
When they are good & mind they get petted & Praised.

My fiance has just put food out for all of her dogs for the last 30 years, none of them were overweight, none of them ate everything in site. Our present dog always has food in her bowl. Sometimes she eats it all, sometimes what we put in her bowl will last a few days... she eats what and when she wants. We do use dog treats for good behavior, but not on a regular basis so she doesn't come to expect them, we never reward her with people food.
