so far so good. My example of a plywood welding bench was poor, just to illustrate something that was totally non-conductive.
The juice has to flow through the work, not me, or the ground.
I did buy the magnet from HF, looks like it will work nicely.
off tomorrow to get my 220 receptacle and put a little of this theory to practice.

I knew that being the ground to a lot of juice is not good; i.e. lightning, so my instincts were to
weld in an insulated environment. It's this clamping to a metal table and then leaning up next to the table
that has me thinking overtime as to how to situate my body in a way to position the rod at the desired angle, yet
also be comfortable in that position for some extended period of time, and not "short circuit" myself by operator error.

I use a 1 foot square sheet of 14 gauge directly under the weld if I am using a non traditional welding table.

good tip, that sounds simple and easy and I'll remember it

I have to strongly disagree with your saying small inverters don't do well with 6010.
From what I have read on a lot of welding forums, including Miller's site. Miller really dropped the ball with the Maxstar far as running 6010. # 1 complaint with this machine.

I don't have nearly the experience that you or Tjflicek have but the "myth" about the Maxstar 150 not running 6010 is widely reported/repeated and as a result I have never even bothered to try it. A light weight 110/220volt inverter is not the type of machine that a serious pipe welder would choose anyway. 6011/6013 serve well enough for general repairs and fabrication so the lack of 6010 capability, whether real or not, has been a non issue for me.

I still say it is very hard to beat Hobart's 335A 6011. If you're not working to a WPS / code what difference does it make if you use 6010, or 6011? I ran a 5-G open root pipe with 335A 6011, all four coupons bent perfect. Good enough for most of us here!

Island, a lot of the Maxstars ARE sold to serious people. Most non serious people won't shell out that much money. It's all about the portablity, and they provide enough output to do some forms of pipe work. 200 amps is generally considered about all you would need on average even on a pipeline.

You know how it goes, a guy tends to stick with what he cut his teeth on, thus 6010. Besides I've got a lot of 6010 in stock and i'm to cheap to buy anything else until it's gone.

I'm still scratching my head over how Miller could let that Maxstar on the market like that, I would like to try one with 6010 just out of curiosity to see what it runs like. I always liked my Idealarc transformer the only problem with it is it won't go low enough for light TIG work. Thats why I bought the Pewee.

Thats why the Lincoln SA 200 is still the mainstay for rigwelders and pipeliners . Ain't that right Shield Arc?

I've never seen one, only going by what I have read.
