new f-250 mpg?

I'm doing the same type of calculations, etc.

I currently have a Chevy K3500 Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 with 5.7 V8. I'm looking for a Regular Cab Long Bed 4X4. I'd like the truck to be the one I drive to work (75 miles/day) and also used for towing my Bobcat, and tractor when I need too. I am considering the diesel engine.

My K3500 gets about 10 mpg in town and 14 on the highway. I'm currently driving a '97 Honda Civic to work, but I'm now going to be letting my son -- now 16 -- use this car.

It's almost cheaper for me to buy another small economy car for work travel and forget the diesel and get a new gas truck with the V10.

I can agree, another family with pretty much diesels.. My beef is, the fuel here, last three years has been significantly higher than any gas brand, be it a major flag or off brand,,, Of course our heating oils are much higher also... I understand supply and demand, what I don't understand is why the New England area cannot get out from under using middle eastern oils,,, Too bad we can't get oil from Alaska instead of selling that direct to Japan.. I don't have the time any more and more honestly, the patience to look it up, I remember when being a town selectman 19 years ago, we had double the cost heating oils compared to the rest of the country... There is something about the senior Kennedy, Teddy's father, and some deal he set up about 60 years back and that is why this area is dependent on foreign oils... Just like California, just seems either coast line, and the costs are considerably higher than the rest of our country...

Resale around the same??!! You've gotta be kidding! Just take a look in any book, or even on eBay for that matter, and you'll find that especially in the Ford and Dodge that the 5 year old diesel models usually will bring 5k more than a similar gas model with the same miles.

About 2 weeks ago at a large auto auction that sells about 3000 cars on each auction day, the difference between a Ford Excursion with the V10 gas and the diesel model was almost $10,000! I wouldn't call that close in resale.

I'd agree with you there. I drive about 50 miles a day between the office, home, and hospital. My truck never leaves the place except for work 99% of the time. I've got a mid size car that I use driving to work that gets about 30.

Our unleaded is about the same as yours. Diesel went down this weekend to $1.82 in most places from TX to ID. MO and WY were the cheapest I saw at $1.79 and $1.72.

Dargo - I interpreted his statement differently.
I thought he meant that the $4-6K in his example would remain and the resale of the diesel version would retain that $4-6K over its gas counterpart.

Did I not get this right?

I'm a ford man myself, but chevy is offering a new choice

1/2 ton silverado hybrid Supposed to get 10-15% better mpg. Cheaper than a Diesel.

I agree but that is not the same today. So I guess on a diesel people do not change ATF, fuel filter, glow relays, glow plug cost, sensors up the ying yang many qts of engine oil, oil filters, atf fluid etc. Again my PSD was in the shop over 11 times in 4 years. My car has been in 2 in 2.8 years.

My car has a lifetime fuel filter as per Lexus/Toyota; so you do not change it per any dealer. Tune ups in gas cars are still much less then diesel. Next my oil changes are about 60% cheaper then my truck (less capacity for same miles). Nevermind the fuel savings. No rear diff oil or front diff oil. My PSD went through tires and brakes like crazy. My cars is on original brakes and tires last 60+K miles. I only have one battery so that is less $$$$. No problems in winter. No fuel additives. My Atf holds 4 qts and not 32 like my old PSD. Gee, a little savings there.

Having had both gas and diesel vechailes, diesel was a total waste for me.

Dargo- The small price when reselling is not important. You get like 3 to $4K more. The delta in prices is about the same (or a wash). You are selling more, but pay more upfront. Again it is equal.

As auctions are again only worth what some person pays. If you pay $10K more, **** you can have it for that large a price.

So your experience was not very good. I suppose there are exceptions to everything. I can tell you that my sisters Lexus 470 was one big slug. The V8 in it is way underpowered, the mileage was 12-14 mpg and the thing had two immediate repairs after the warranty of a water pump ($1100) and the "electric box" ($1000). She sold it for a Acura MDX and won't be going back to Lexus anytime soon. She had issues with Lexus just as you seemed to have with your PSD. I have a IDI and quite frankly, no ying's and no yangs. After 11 years, 6 glow plugs, no relays, I change my fuel filter only as I see fit, oil every 5000 after that, its just drive with a load of rock, lumber or other material, something that is hard to do in our car. You have to ask yourself the question, did I really need a truck. Diesel was not a waste of time for you, it was a poor decision on your part, I don't think you needed one or even a truck for that matter.
