New Garage, Grease Pit?

   / New Garage, Grease Pit? #11
Trevor,
Could you post pictures and dimension of your pit?
When I will build my post barn (this summer hopefully), this is something that I would like to do where I will be putting my back hoe. A pit still has its place!
That said, a lift will be mandatory in my Shop "section".:D
Boy the luxuries of both... even one!

Gas fumes are heavier than air and can accumulate in the bottom of pits. Pits are still used commercially but must be vented.

Here is a picture of my pit-I mean lift. I am getting too old to be crawling around in a pit. My lift ran $2k and some change. Byron;

Nice shop! What is your ceiling height to accommodate the lift?

Thanks!

I would check with the local building inspector to see if pits are even allowed, before I went to all the trouble of building one and then being ordered to fill it in.
You will probably have to supply a detailed plan/blueprint.

My ceiling height is 13'. They make lifts and adapters for shorter ceilings.

The ceiling in my last garage was 10' and its a few inches shorter in the new house. That's bare minimum for stacking a couple smaller cars.

They're illegal here.

Many years back, a friend wanted one, so he dug one and laid some plywood over the opening. Then he poured his concrete slab over the whole thing...thinner at the point where the plywood was. After he had the building inspector inspect, he chipped out the cement over the plywood and opened his pit.

This was used for about 5 years when he decided there were better ways to work on his cars and he filled the whole thing in. I think he has a lift now.

A lot of work and trouble for nothing.

It's 10x14x6 another 2' for a sump pump. Rented the hoe, framed it up, 4 separate placements ,did that all ourselves. Flatwork ( floor ) was contracted out to pros. ---Trevor
