I prefer his method, using 1/2" stock. If he had remodeled the shims he would only have a 3/16" edge against the pins. With his method he'll never "wear" them loose again.

... Weld thru the slot from the bottom side to the part of the shim that overhangs the slot. Build it up enuf for a good sturdy surface for the pin to bear against.

I had considered this method and the idea was helpful but as you said, it would have required building up the weld and then grinding it back to fit the space, at the correct angle to get the pin's angle to match it correctly. Using the 1-2" bar I didn't have to grind anything and it fits perfectly.
