Hey, I'm Ryan from PA. We are going to start seeding down an Alfalfa/Orchardgrass mix in the spring. As for used hay equipment: What is the most dependable and most reasonably priced thats out there. We're just starting out and want to get off on the right foot. I'll take any suggestions from planting to marketing. We're lookin to square bale, btw.

The folks at Penn State publish an "Agronomy Guide" that may prove useful in your planning.

The Agronomy Guide 2009–2010

Section 12 of that guide provides prototype enterprise budgets for alfalfa and grass hay. You could modify these budgets to reflect your expected costs and revenues and determine break-even prices/yields.

Have you tried the local University Ag extension? Her ein Calif, they have lots of answers for that kind of stuff. Between them, and the state university Master Gardener program, you can find all sorts of answers.
