New Holland TC40
I have a TC 40 that will not move in any gear but 1st or 2nd in low or medium range, I think it may be the clutch but did not smell it burning. Any ideals would be appreciated. I was also wondering how much trouble it would be to self perform clutch replacement if that is the problem. Tractor has about 750 hrs.

Good Evenin Brikman,
If your getting the tractor to move in low or medium range, Im thinking the clutch must be working to some degree...

I would look in the manual and see if you can find the clutch adjustment procedure for that tractor.

There is an adjustment procedure in the manual, that would be a place to start.

Also, make sure the shaft the clutch pedal rotates on is greased. There are three zerks on the tube that holds that shaft on my 2003 TC40. One is near the clutch pedal, one is near the brake pedals, and one in the middle.

You would need to split the tractor at the bell housing-to-engine point to replace the clutch.

You are welcome, but I'm not sure if we did help. How did you make out with your upper gears?

BTW, I never start out in high range 3rd or 4th gear. On a paved road, I might do a rolling shift up into those gears after starting out in high range 1st or 2nd.

Yes the input helped. When we got the clutch out it was pretty much shot. Replaced clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. The clutch damper was ok. Every thing went fairly smoothly with the procedure. Found the new parts at a great price (compared to dealer).
When in high range I always shift up starting from 2nd. Other people do drive my tractor as I use it in my construction business so they may not be using the right gears.
Thanks again for the help.

Downshifting to lower gear = good, higher gear and slipping clutch = bad

When your tractor is used by many people, the clutch is gonna suffer unless they are all well-schooled and care about the equipment. Back in the day when most cars were standard shift, people riding the clutch was a common reason for early clutch failure.
