New Holland Tractors

Are used New Holland Tractors a good buy?

Now there is a statement. How high is up ? Is fishing good next month ? How dark is real dark ?

If you purchase the model of your dreams that can do the tasks in your furure for 25% of retail value ... you have a good buy. Unfortunately most of us pay retail value depending on the market. As far as mechanical / value based on competitive models I would rate them above average. I have owned a TC 45 DA and currently a TC 55 DA. No problems and they are a great fit for my activities. Local dealer support is also helpful in your decision. Good luck in your search.

I would not suggest that anyone purchase a used New Holland compact with CVT transmission. They didn't make that many and the production has been halted. They may bring back CVT, but it will be a changed transmission from a different country/source. Of course, if the deal is sweet enough, the CVT might be considered. Other than that, it's like shopping for any other used tractor of a major brand. New Holland compacts used to be made by Shibaura in Japan. That relationship has been severed by New Holland, and the current compacts are re-badged LS brand models. The Shibaura made tractors have a very good reputation. Those tractors were assembled/tested in a US assembly plant and shipped to the dealers completely assembled. There was not a variation in quality from dealer-to-dealer depending on assembly skills.

My Shibaura made model has been a very good tractor. From what I hear at the dealership, they're not to thrilled with the LS models.

We had a 1710 (Shibaura built) for twenty years. It was used when we bought it. It was only in the last 18 months that we ever had any trouble with it. Mostly, we were trying to do more than it was designed to do.

We replaced it with a Workmaster 55 and have been extremely pleased with the tractor. Extremely solid. All metal bodywork. We looked at the Boomer 50 and were not impressed.

Jim;
What models did the CVT appear in ? I have heard Fendt went with a CVT and it is working out very well. I had no idea new holland had them available in compacts. I sure like my shuttle better than the hydro. They do work well in a lawn tractor though.

I have owned a 1720 28HP 1999 model for 6 years now...
Any Shibaura compact NH is gonna be a good unit...
So far I've bought filters and changed the oil...
That's about it...
I bought it with 245 one owner hours and now have over 650 hours...
They are really good machines...
I do not have any experience with the LS made compacts or the Indian made Workmasters...
The other units to my knowledge in the agriculture line up are very good...

Rather than go into great detail, you can use the search feature in the New Holland forums to find lots of posts about the CVT. They were first offered in the Boomer 8N and then available in the 3040 and 3045 models. In general, the problems were software and sensor related, but some internal wear issues also showed up.

The other issue is that the CVT transmission was not electronically link with the engine which can cause the transmission to get ahead of the engine. As Jim stated in one of his comments, New Holland might bring back the Boomer 3040-3050, as cab models only, at the end of this year and these new unit are suppose to have the generation 2 CVT which links the engine with the transmission.

I have had an LS tractor since 2007 - there is nothing wrong with them.

Didn't say there was. I was only relaying what I've heard from my salesman and the lead mechanic at the dealership.
