BMAC,

Great looking house. Regarding the outlet in the island....I don't think I've seen an outlet on the surface top of an island. I'd think you're ok. Won't they just cut a hole in the side of the cabinet and mount the outlet there? Most folks wouldn't want an exposed outlet in the granite anyway.

Just my $0.02. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi, Greg,

<font color="blue"> but, I would think an open shelving "unit" on top for towels like Eddie said or maybe a clock radio, plant, etc would look pretty good. </font>

I think it would look alot better if it extended to the ceiling. And you and Eddie have some good ideas on how to utilize the space. I might just save that as a "Daddy Project" so I don't add anymore expense right now.

<font color="blue"> Could the outlets be installed into the face of the island(front or side) without being too conspicuous? Just a thought, I cant really tell from the picture. </font>

We looked at the side as a possibility today. The front will actually have stools placed there as it is another eating place. The issue is that the island has a built-in appliance lift in one of the cabinets and the outlet needs to be accessible to the mixer my wife has planned for the lift. Now, I may convince her to place the outlet inside the cabinet and just keep the mixer plugged in under the counter top. Would be out of site in that location, but would not be usable for other appliances (hand mixer, electric knife, waffle ireon, etc.). So, we would definately lose some funtionality if we can't get one on the backsplash.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hello, Kevin.

<font color="blue"> I don't think I've seen an outlet on the surface top of an island. </font>

Me neither. You may not be able to see the island clearly in the pictures I posted, but it has 2 levels. There is the main work surface that has a small sink on one end. Then, there is a narrow, elevated surface that will serve as a breakfast bar. The outlets were supposed to go on the vertical backsplash that extends from the main counter to the underside of the breakfast bar. I hope this makes sense.

<font color="blue"> Won't they just cut a hole in the side of the cabinet and mount the outlet there? </font>

They probably could, but my wife has plans for appliances that really need an outlet on the backsplash. As I mentioned in the previous post, we may get by with 1 outlet under the counter (inside one of the cabinets), but I think she really wants at least one on the backsplash. We'll see how it works out.

<font color="blue"> Most folks wouldn't want an exposed outlet in the granite anyway. </font>

As many who have been following this thread can attest, we haven't exactly done things like "most folks". No tub in the master bath, whirlpool tub in the guest bath, shop/garage/barn in the basement, large, unfinished attic over the garage, kids bedrooms bigger than the master, etc. I guess we are a little "different". One thing I do know, however, is that if Momma wants an outlet in granite, Momma's gonna get an outlet in granite. At least, if it is doable.

I appreciate your comments.

Well, the electricians, plumbers, trim carpenters and tile guy were very busy last week. Everyone showed up on Tuesday and it was like a 3-ring circus out there. The objective was to install all plumbing and light fixtures, the trim guys were doing odd jobs here and there and the tile guy, well, I think he's just moved in. He's been grouting some rooms, he laid the tile in the small powder room and did the backsplash in the kitchen (which looks great, BTW)

I won't bore you with the details of "how" it happened, but there was a major SNAFU with the electrical fixtures. They sent the wrong stuff. My wife went out Tuesday afternoon and everything was wrong. I'm guessing they had about a fourth of the fixtures installed, maybe more. In any event, after a few calls to the lighting place, the error was found. But, now, the electricians had to "uninstall" everthing that had been placed and then wait until the next day for the correct fixtures to be delivered and the wrong stuff to be picked up. There are a few items that should have been delivered that are now on back order. Hopefully, they will be in soon. To their credit, the lighting place admitted their error and they will pay for the electrician's labor for the install-uninstall of the wrong fixtures. That's the way to do business.

I think the plumbers had the right stuff delivered and there were only a couple of incidents. One guy installed 2 kitchen sinks wrong. When I pointed out the error to him, he realized that he made a mistake and immediately set out to make the correction. On the main sink, somehow he managed to break the fixture so we now have to order a new one. Another incident involving the plumbers was the breakage of a floor tile in the kitchen as they were drilling through the floor from the basement to run either a water line or drain line. These were not drilled during the initial rough-in because they needed to have the center island in place to ensure they drilled in the right place. So, when their drill met some resistance after going through the subfloor, I guess they pulled out a hammer and started banging away. Needless to say, the tile guy was not pleased.

I did learn a little more about the turf wars that sometimes go on between the subs. The tile guy is a talker. He's been telling me about the politics that take place between the subs and the little things that can happen that can cause a little friction. As he says, just a little consideration for the other craftsmen would go a long way in making their work more enjoyable.

I didn't take many pictures today. The place is real messy again and the electrical/plumbing fixture installation is in progress. But I did take a couple of pics of the basement shop. Nothing exciting, really. But there is one interesting thing that had to be done for inspection purposes that will be undone immediately after we get the CO.

As you know, the shop has a single garage door plus a man door. Our building code mandates that all garages have a certain slope to the floor. I did not want a sloped floor, so we poured a level one. In oder to pass inspection, we had to frame the garage door opening, place a man door, and place exterior sheathing. Once we get the CO, we'll tear out the framed section and install the garage door. Before you worry too much about this plan, my builder did the same thing when he built a home for the head building inspector here. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a picture of the newly framed garage door.

Here's the two rows of fluorescent lights that run the length of the shop. My builder ensured me that these are the kind that won't flicker in cold weather.

And here's the utility sink in the shop. You can see they also installed the conduit and boxes for the electrical outlets.

And, finally, here's the fans on the screened porch. Don't really know why I took that picture today, but here it is anyway.

I'll get some more later in the week. We should have the electrical inspection done early this week, after which we can get some juice turned on in the house. That will give me better light for pictures, I hope.

bmac,

Ahhhh.......the end is in site! Things really heat up at this stage. Lots of last minute decisions and snafus, as you're finding out.

I had a similar situation in the walk out section of my basement. I wanted a garage door for a future shop. Evidently the code here says we would have to build walls around the "garage" in the basement to isolate if from the rest of the area. Funds were short at that stage and I didn't want to have the builder install the walls - I could do that later. We have brick on that exterior wall like you and I didn't think about doing a what you did. Anyway, I ended up having them put in two 3' doors like French doors, so I get a 6' opening.

Not really what I wanted but it'll do. Actually I could get my Deere 3320 thru that opening if I needed to.

Your shop is looking good. I assume from the pics that it is under the main garage. The screened in porch is looking great. I love the fans you picked out.

bmac,
Thanks for the update photos. Was a bit surprised to se 2 fans in the screen porch. I think I would have tended to put in just one myself.

As you are finding out, about this time in the construction process if at all possible, if you or your wife can stop over around 10am every day it will be worth it.

Did you come up with a final plan for the screen porch, how you are going to enclose it? Also did your backsplash for the kitchen island get the cut out for the electrical outlet?

Even with the snafus you can at least be happy that you ahve people working on your house. So many times at this point you have to wait for subs and it can be quite frustrating to wait a couple weeks for the electician lets say. The subs on your house seem to be showing up real regualr, which is good for you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello again, Steve.

<font color="blue"> Funds were short at that stage and I didn't want to have the builder install the walls - I could do that later. </font>

I know very well about funds running low. We are making a number of last minute changes in an attempt to get this thing back on budget.

Thanks. Yes it is under the garage. Concrete walls on 3 sides and overhead. Some call it "the bunker". Good place to be when a tornado blows in. I have to give credit to my bride on the fans (as well as all the other fixtures, tile, paint colors, etc.). Then, she would likely pass the credit on to the decorator. Although I can take no credit, I also don't have to shoulder any blame if things get looking goofy. I'm comfortable with my position on this. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good evening, Rox.

<font color="blue"> Was a bit surprised to se 2 fans in the screen porch. I think I would have tended to put in just one myself.
</font>

We thought the porch was too long for one fan/light. From the angle of the photo, it may not be easy to tell. But, the porch clearly needs 2 fixtures.

<font color="blue">Did you come up with a final plan for the screen porch, how you are going to enclose it? Also did your backsplash for the kitchen island get the cut out for the electrical outlet? </font>

Well, after to talking to the builder and the trim guy, we determined that the cheapest way to finish the porch was to do what we had originally planned - a 3 ft knee wall with screen material above that. Now, instead of using T&G cyprus for the interior of the half wall, we are using a hardiplank vertical siding material. Its fairly cheap material, cheap installation, will take paint well and will be completely weather proof. Although I have some reservations on how it will ultimately look, I trust my builder and the trim guy when they said it will look good. We should find out this week. I do thank you for your suggestions with the screened door. Very imaginative.

The island backsplash thing has been fixed. They had to remove the one that was originally installed and take it back to the shop to cut the holes for the recepticles and switch for the disposal. Everything is ok with that now.

Thanks for checking in, rox. Talk to you later.

bmac,

Actually I think the Hardi Plank idea is going to look very good when it is done. I think you are going to like the look. It is going to give an outside feel, well a "porch" feel to the porch.

Regarding the porch fans - Must have been the angle of the photo, like in Steve's photo of the kitchen to the family room. The depth of the room isn't showing up in the photo.

bmac,

Love the pictures. The house is incredible!!!

You reminded me of a job I did once on a screened in porch.

The home owners keep their bird food on their porch and the squirrels new it. They actually tore holes through the screen to get through it. The bottom three feet off the screen was full of holes and patches.

Even after removing the bird food, they continue to tear through the screen looking for it.

I put a 4 foot solid barrier around the bottom of the porch to keep them out and replace the screen.

Thanks for the kind words, Eddie. I'll be sure to remind the family - no bird food on the screened porch. If only I could train my kids as easily as your client trained the squirrels. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, now that your dozer is out of commission you should have a few days to come east and clear some trails for me. Also, the way you work, I'm guessing if I put you in charge of the house buildin', we could move in in about 3 days. That's if you brought Steph along. Maybe 5 days if you come alone. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good to hear from you, Eddie.

OK, picture junkies, I snapped a few this afternoon showing some of the slow progress this week. There is always someone out there working, its just hard to document at times.

Most of the stuff I photographed has happened over the past 2 weeks. I'll start on the outside. Here's our submarine that was delivered on Friday. The kids will play with it in the pond, once Eddie brings his dozer to Georgia and digs me one.

OK, bad attempt at humor. For those who haven't seen one before, this is a 1000 gal propane tank that will get buried next Tuesday.

A little closer view.
