New JD4520 cab is destroyed

The dealer took things apart today. It seems all the radiators in the front got bumped, so they all have to be replaced. Good call to not start the tractor until it was looked at :). The hood holder was bent a bit too, but other than the radiators, hood, and hood holding bracket no damage to the engine or any parts of the frame. The top of the cab, the mating plastic bottom part of the cab, and a blower was all the top damage. Finally, the plastic that holds the switches on the right side is gone but all the hydraulic controls and linkage are good. All the parts are on order. Not bad considering they just got it yesterday. It's being kept inside while the parts come in, they expect to start working on it next week.

Current estimate is $6500 in parts, $2100 in labor, so still looking like under $10K to fix it all.

Insurance co. (State Farm) has all the cost to extract the tractor, quotes to clear building away, quote for new building, and tractor repair quote so sometime next week I'll get 5 minutes of consideration on this event and we'll see how they do. I have a $2500 deductible but in the long run that's still a good deal.

On the building demolition, the locals are scavenging the metal roof for shed extensions they want to make. It's amazing how many people wanted the metal. Then, the beams are still good so they are getting those too for their sheds. They will then cut up all the good wood and deliver it to elderly people who heat with wood. So it may turn out that the demolition quote (which was about $4500) will turn into an hour of pushing some wood bits with the FEL. Recycling, country style :D. I am limiting access to people I know, one of the two people involved is an ex firefighter. I'll jump in and give then a hand on the cut-up of wood too.

Pete

For the size of the beam which fell on it, that's not too bad for damage. That would almost be managable if it wasn't covered by insurance. A lot less than what I would have expected with all the plastic on new tractors.

Very good news - all things considered. My first thought when I saw the hood/light combo was "some part of that would have a special location" in the new shop! :)

Maybe right next to a framed 10"x12" picture of the crumpled barn draped over the top of the tractor.

The tractor got hauled off today, leaving me with just a few unhappy parts. Let the repairs begin! I talk to the insurance adjuster tomorrow.

Pete

That steup would be on the wall in the new shed as a "conversation piece"

Deere dealer emailed me these pix of the work in progress. They had to re-order some parts due to a serial number break they missed, that's OK. It's nice they are keeping me informed and sending pictures.

No word from State Farm yet on anything, will contact them this week. Mid week is two weeks since the adjuster was here, and a week longer than what they said it would be to get back to me with an update. I'm glad I didn't hold up repairs waiting to hear from them.

As for the conversation piece, we'll see what debris is left. I did have them keep the hood so I can cut the remaining good side with the decal out. I should get the front headlight piece (less headlights) back, don't know if they will re-use the Deere emblem or not. It's just nice that that such thought can even be pondered at this time.

It's awsome that they will E-mail pics and stay in touch like that. I can't see a car dealer doin' that.

Yeah, how many times in threads where people are deciding what to get has it been said how important the dealer is in the big picture.

Of course, it probably doesn't hurt that this is a pretty slow time of year, and this is a pretty nice job dollars wise. I agree the pics are a nice touch and something most dealers probably wouldn't think to do.

So sorry to hear about your tractor. It makes me uneasy to look at the pics and it's not even mine. I've had good and bad run-ins with insurance companies for all sorts of stuff, none tractor related tho (crosses fingers). That is awesome Deere is keeping you that much in the loop and with pics even. The best of luck to you with the entire situation.

Peete, glad it looks like everything will come out okay. This reminds me that I have to get the Aborists our to cut down this one tree that is leaning over my shed with the tractor in it:eek: That tree cold also hit my house, so it is goin' down this year.

It is important to take care of damaged trees! This one had root-rot which wasn't visable until after it came down.

This oak also looked healthy until it fell. Luckily, it didn't hit anything.

Important criteria for site preparation for the new (current) house: No tree can fall and hit the house. Previous house was in the woods. It was very nice, but with a few hurricanes and microburst we had our moments and one tree on the house. Getting too old for that. Seems like the Red Oaks can fall down if an errant chickadee motors into them the wrong way.

I visited it Monday at the dealer (sounds like I'm visiting a friend in the hospital...). It's done, they should have the invoice Thursday and it might come back Friday. I had them move the loader QCs to the rear of the tractor for a TNT, I'll post pictures when it comes back. Waiting for side cylinder from CCM to finish that. If it shows up today or tomorrow they can put the connectors on it.

The did not use the top of the hood section with the headlights and Deere emblem, so that's going to the new tractor garage. Might wire up the headlights so I can turn them on.

That would be cool! Put them on a motion detector and they can also serve as a little security light.

Glad to hear the tractor's close to being home. How have things gone with the insurance co?

I like kenny's idea for the motion sensor.

Pete,
Good news to hear the tractor is coming home, I hope the new shop building is complete too.

On the extended hydraulic lines for top n tilt, I have not had to disconnect mine since I bought the tractor. I mention this because in my opinion it serves no purpose to hard mount these couplers. Better to have them bundled farther in and out of the way of the hitch. It is still very easy to reach them to uncouple when needed. About the only time you will need to uncouple the top link is when using your phd. I do have the third scv couplers mounted for plugging in the various implements though.

kennyd: yeah, I'll probably do that. I'll put them on a ten volt supply so the bulbs last forever, maybe toss in a NTC resistor for slow start up.

The insurance co. is waiting for the repair bill. They were trying to get up with Deere (don't know who they were talking to) to get an estimate. When I told them it was being fixed, they decided to just wait for the bill. When they have that, then all that info goes to the "decider" and I'll see where I stand. The local scavenging effort goes on, so the $4600 for demolition looks like it might be as low as $1000 or lower. As per an earlier post, note that letting time pass worked out well but I had to have some $$s in reserve to be able to pay repair bills.

Steve: I had the dealer do the hydraulic work. I've never done it, so learning on this one time seemed like a bad idea plus I've got a lot of other stuff going on. I told them to use the QCs on the back, and described them as "in line" and tucked up under the tractor. Well, they mounted the plate in the rear. I brought my hydraulic top link in and had the plate moved up about 4" so all the hoses clear. So down side is QCs not as inconspicuous, up side is easy access when putting on the PHD. I'll put pix on the thread I started months ago on the subject so others can see your approach and what I ended up with. Sometimes miscommunication is serendipitous, other times it's just dippy :). I have the 3rd SCV for the cylinder on the sickle mower.
New tractor garage is at a point where I'm putting in studs so I can put up plywood walls. Here's a shot of part of the electrical work which is done and has passed inspection. It's raining today, so the task is the last step inside the house to connect water to the garage. Once the studs are up, I'm finally ready for insulation. Had to take a week off of that for the solar project, we finally had good weather and dry ground.
