Hello Ribz,

If the material is dark brown its cosmoline I think and be careful as it is a rust proofer and its thick so you may end up dipping each head in D+L to dissolve it and scrape it out to avoid filling the swear jar from slipping socket wrenches.

Be very sure to mark the depth the allen socket wrench reaches in the socket head with a narrow piece of duck tape to avoid slipping and blood and filling the swear jar-do not ask how I know this!!!!

Removing them all at once will let you clean the mounts as you go with 100 grit paper to get the grass dust off then spray it with fluid film and let it dry to combat the rusting UNLESS you want to sand and paint the rotor before you mow-all depending on your time and how much you have to do the repairs/upkeep.
A scribe/oring pick or tiny screw driver works just as well to dig the heads out don't use jewelers screw drivers use the small ones with the stems that flip to a flat head or phillips head driver.

As far as the bolts go you do not need a torque wrench but 50-75 pounds of torque should be plenty provided you use blue Loctite on each bolt. Putting the bolt heads on the back side will reduce the amount of grass dust that will acccumulate in the allen head bolt opening.

One small bottle will not be enough though so you should buy a second one. Did you purchase the Allen head spring washers(hex head spring washers) for the Allen bolts to be used on the nuts? they come in a box of 50 or 100 units I think.

You should have a good wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts to make them easier to remove when the time comes.
The very small stiff wire brushes with the short bristles are very strong and you should keep several of them in your tool box as they will be very easy to use to avoid filling the swear jar.

Wow. Was that fast shipping! Got my parts today.

Questions I have...

The allen head cap bolts are coated with some kind of dark material. When I install these, should I fill the hole with heavy grease or maybe silicone to keep it from getting packed with stuff harder to remove than grease or silicone?

I bought a set of hex head sockets so I can use a ratchet or breaker bar on the heads of the cap head bolts. Should I use a torque wrench and tighten to a specific .lb pressure?

Will the job go faster if I remove all 36 first, or work station to station removing old and installing new as I go?

Thanks

I was looking for a flail mower and a friend out in Louisiana said he had a green one. I went out that way and went to pay him and he said "no charge". (Dang thing was gonna cost me $150)
It was a 25A of unknown age, (Dang...am I supposed to care just how old it is???)
Used it for a month before the belt broke...(now how in the world am I going to get that much money out of this old green mower if I decide to sell it??)
Enjoy your investment, keep your grass cut and watch out for loose nuts (on the knives)

Leonz, it's showing up now. In the list of threads, you were shown as last poster, but no post was showing on the actual thread.

I'd love to give an update, but she hurt me today. Just got back from ER. Trying to put the separated pieces of the pto together and mashed the tip of my little finger between the shaft and mower. Tuff fracture of the last bone in finger. I'm pretty sure the nail is a goner. Hoping to keep swelling down enough they won't need to lance the nail later. I was lucky there wasn't any more pressure than there was, or I'd be short a fingertip.

As opposed to the loose nut behind the wheel?

Here's her new smile

My neighbor came over today and we checked gearcase oil. greased the bearings, Set mower roller to 3.5" setting, leveled the gearbox with top link.We ran it out and tested it out.

Good news, she purred. Smooth and quiet. Not real impressed with cut vs finish mower. On the field I only cut a handful of times per year, much better results than bush hog, but slow ground speed was necessary. My neighbor cut and I watched since I'm still on injured reserve with my crushed pinky. More when I don't have to type one handed.

I put my 25A behind my JD 2555 and it cut as fast as I could hang on without bouncing out of the seat.
Probably has a few more horsepower, and the cut was as good as a sharp bush hog.

Try cutting at the 2" setting. I'm not impressed with mine at 3.5" either. Try it at the 1/2" setting too, you may be surprised. At 1/2" mine cuts probably 2.5" or so. Yours may vary but this is mine on the 1/2" setting. You can see how high the weeds were to start:
