Yep, I know what you mean - there's nothing else I've gotten as much benefit from, and hated as passionately, as computers.

Muhammad,
I'm using a Pentium 133, 48 mb Ram, cable modem hook-up on which I've downloaded up to 60k/second and been told it can hit 100k/second. I know you've mentioned before to empty Temporary Internet Files but I don't do it all the time. I just did a little experiment after I emptied the Temp files, here are my results. From Main Index I clicked Feedback & more and it took 26 seconds to load, from Feedback & More I clicked the first message and had it displayed in 11 seconds, scrolled down and clicked 2nd message and got it in 23 seconds, 3rd in 9 seconds, 4th in 13 seconds and clicked Main Index and got there in 5 seconds, From main I clicked Kubota Owning and got there in 48 seconds. This is way faster then when I don't empty the Temp Internet Files. Are the times that I've listed normal? Does my 133 Pentium have a lot to do with it? Do you agree that the 48 seconds is too long to wait or am I expecting too much? Thank you in advance...I still really like reading and responding to this board, appreciate all that you do./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif JimBinMI

In addition, when you do empty the Temporary Internet Files you lose your automatic Log In /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif JimBinMI

Well, those times are slower than what the forum might take on a dial-up connection. As Bob mentioned, a faster computer would certainly improve your viewing speeds, on all sites. However, I have a computer at home that is even slower than the one you are using, and with a 28.8 modem that connects at about 16k, and the page loads are about like this... (this is from click to complete)

Initial load of main index: 8-12 seconds
Load of most popular topic (Kubota Owning) from main index: 10-12 seconds
Load individual messages within that topic: 7-8 seconds
Load of entire thread in a topic, 4-5 messages: 10-12 seconds, and longer for larger threads
Previewing or posting a message: 10-16 seconds

Here at work on my cable modem, I connect on average at about 256kbps... I am at about 240 right now. Sometimes connections are as high as 1,000kbps, but that doesn't affect the loading times here.

And, those times are 1 second or less on all pages, except for the 24/48 hours/7 days checks, which load in 1, 2, and 8 seconds the first time, and if I don't clear my temporary internet files, those pages load instantly. If I do, they take 1,2, and 8 seconds.

My system is a PIII 450mhz/256 mb ram, and I use IE 5.0 with no proxy server. You may be connecting through a proxy which might slow your connection down, and be very inconsistent. I can say that when my proxy was removed, it was like a clogged drain being opened. At times things got extremely frustrating, with long, mysterious hang-ups, similar to what Bird describes (although he is not on a cable modem). In fact, at times that it got really bad, I connected through a dial-up and pages loaded faster! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

What I mentioned above are just my two most popular examples, I have tested on many systems, connections, and configurations. While the loading times go up and down from system to system, there are no 'hang ups' - those would happen on each system if it were a problem on the site.

Muhammad, I'm using a dialup connection, and I wish I could get the kind of speed you're talking about, and I do on the other two tractor boards, maybe that's why I get so frustrated with this one at times. Since it's working for you in the circumstances you mentioned, then apparently my problem must be something on this end, but darned if I know what.

Hi Bird,

I just don't see anything on this board specifically, which would cause 1 and 2 minute page load delays. As I have noted, I experience less speed on a dialup, but nothing nowhere near the kinds of problem you are having.

There are so many settings on your computer that could cause something like this. You really would have to go through and tweak each one. And, from what I have read of your messages, you are more of a tractor expert than computer expert <g>.

Often the problem lies in the Windows Registry settings, which may have been changed by some program installation. Or, it just may need optimization for your specific modem and ISP.

Here is a description of a great program called TweakDUN, which will do just that.

"TweakDUN allows changes to TCP/IP settings in the Windows Registry that can affect the speed of your dial-up or netowrk IP connection. These settings have always been available for changing but only via manual Registry editing. TweakDUN provides an interface to enable you to easily change these values, including default packet size, buffer size, and more. Use the Windows default settings, try the recommended settings from the author, or experiment to find settings that works well for you. Other features include a handy utility for establishing and maintaining a local Hosts file, to speed IP address lookup, and full support for America Online. If you're looking for a way to speed up your Internet dial-up connection, give TweakDUN a look."

This program can be downloaded from ZDNet at:
http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000LUV

There are a couple of other programs which do the same thing, but TweakDUN has been around a long time, and has hundreds of thousands of users.

Hope this helps.

Unless you are using a cookie wiper, the emptying of the cache does not remove cookies---which is what the board uses to "remember" you and do the auto login.

Muhammad,
OK what's a Proxy server? I just got AT&T @Home cable, is @home a Proxy? I do use Internet Explorer 5.0 or sometimes AOL because I have service until June. How can I tell what speed I'm connected at? Thanks in Advance, JimBinMI /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

JimBinMI, I think I know what a proxy server is, but since I'm not sure, I'll let someone else answer, but if you want to see at what speed you are connected, just point your cursor at the icon (little picture) of the two screens at the lower right on your screen; next to the time indicator. Don't click, just point at it and it should tell you how many bytes have been sent and received and at what speed (26400 bps in my case, and occasionally at only 24000 bps).
