The next problem: hopefully this post hasn't sunk into oblivion.

I broke the bolt/pin that goes thru the front of the tractor casting and thru the rod end of the power steering ram. it appears that what was there was a 9/16" grade 8 bolt. when the bolt broke, the ram travels back the next time you steer right and drives the high pressure line into the crank pulley. real messy and a pain to repair.
but I did it.

about 4 operating hours later, (although with most of it of loader work) the bolt broke again. when it broke, I wasn't using the loader (brush hog actually) and actually had the loader bucket off.

can anyone give me any guidance to where the problem may lie? I'm suprised that that little ram can shear off a 9/16" grade8 bolt. especially when my neighbor's 5000 has a dinky little 1/2" pin holding it.

help!

Mine has been broken sometime in its past, before I bought it. The fix was to bolt a plate across the top portion of the anchor pin. The way mine was broken, the main casting where the pin goes throughabove and below the ram was broken. So far, this fix is working. I am having trouble getting the setscrews adjusted so that the slave cylinder on top of the Ram works in both directions. I tried the method of measuring the clearance on both setscrews and then trying it but there must be other problems. The fluid squirts out the top vent hole in the reservoir.

The recommendation from the ford dealer was that possibly the pressure relief valve was sticking. still seems suprising that it could shear that bold, but maybe.
Does anyone know where the pressure relief is on that machine? I'm guessing on the pump. gotta do some more looking.

somehow I knew you'd be the one to come back with something. you are truely my ford/new holland minor deity. I shall make offerings of burnt UTF.

it could be that one, (the separate resevoir and pump.) I am praying that that's not it, but the one on top (numbers 17-21) as it'll be infinitely easier to get to. I'm really hoping that it's just stuck or a little rusty (I think there was some water in the system this winter, as it steered hard till it warmed up a little.) I got the tractor in nov, so didn't discover all the little problems till dead winter.

The shim in the illustration is my clue to pressure relief.

thanks

nope. it's the second image you posted, with the resevoir above the pump, separate.
at least it looks like the pressure relief is easier to get to.
