New Respect For Fence Chargers

I don't remember our fencer being so powerful. Even as a kid it was a jolt, but it wasn't so bad. We had one guy who worked for us that would always grab your arm then touch the wire. He thought that was real funny. Regretably, my father thought it was pretty funny to, so we just avoided being near the guy when there was a fence nearby. I guess ours was a lower voltage. It was just to keep dairy cows in.

I have been zapped a few times this year working on the fence at the in-laws. It isn't so bad when it hits your hands but I was reaching over the barb wire top on the heifer pen to get a football and my knee touched the middle wire (the charged one). That stung something fierce.

We have a friend who works with us in construction. About 20 years ago he fell and ended up having a blood clot do some damage. He can barely use his entire left side of his body anymore but still works with us the best he can with one good arm. He is also a human wire tester now. He can grab hold of a 220 line with his bad arm and hold on to it with no noticeable difference (he is kind of crazy) to let us know if the power is off or on. He has trouble feeling 110 at times though.

Several years ago I lived in a small community out in the country. For the most part it was as safe as could be but we had a group of teens that lived down the road that were always getting in trouble. On night my dog went crazy, barking like I knew something was wrong. I looked out my two story window to see these teens running down my long driveway with a 100lb dog chasing them. They got over the fence and kept running across the road, through my neighbor’s yard and straight into the neighbor’s electric fence. I smiled while watching them fall into the hot wire and dance around. The next day I saw my neighbor out repairing the fence so I told him what happened. We had a pretty good laugh and I never had any more problems with those teens.
