Nylon can be used for a bearing. Maybe try the plastic cutting boards you buy at Wal-Mart. Use two hole saws to make rings and then stack a few rings up for a longer bearing surface. Bearing grade plastics are available online and from bearing supply stores if you want to buy something ready made.

Mr. HE:cool:

Thank You - Good Ideas.

I have heard that fruit wood (pear is the best) will make a very good bearing surface, as long as you keep them oiled. Google wood bearings for ideas.

" Too much thinking & too little working. "

Dang , Others have that problem to ?

Interesting Idea . I use to use a galvanized water tank for weight on my KK disk , now it is sitting in the shed . Have a 7' cultipacker but it is not a smooth roller so your drawing is now perpetuating and idea in the noggin .

Deer Man - Thanks. I had considered wood & leather both. But think I will try the PVC first.

Time's a wasting.

Connecting rods will be cut off at red line and welded to the bridal. They should make nice strong pillow blocks.

Made some progress today. Not a lot but something. Of course still thinking and it still hurts.

First set a bunch of junk on the tank and see what looks best. Like the RR spikes, but torch is out of gas and grinder is way to slow. Same with the lag bolts. 3/4" Water pipe at 1.5" seems to be the ticket. Just don't have enough for the whole job. So will use some 1". Some RR spikes that are cut off. Like the lag bolts, just real slow to cut. Maybe in a week or so will get tanks filled and do a lot of Whacking.:thumbsup:

Rows spiral around just a little, spacing is 5" between stobbs and rows. As you can see from the pictures each row is staggered. No need for exact spacing, Marked out 1 row and started gluing junk on. Quit gluing when the shade ran out. Time for a cold 1 (maybe 3) and more thinking.:thumbsup:

More brain strain. :D

Did some math. Tank 23.5" in diameter. 5" spacing of feet & rows, tells me that I will need some where between 170 & 180 feet.

Checked my tack welds, most are as good as I expected and some much better. Using 3/16", 6013 rod, 75 amps on an old AC buzz Box. Even tack welding rod is going going pretty fast. Think once through with the tacking, will go to 1/8" rod, 7014 or 6011.

Stobs (feet) are going to be mixture of 1/2", 3/4" black iron pipe. Some cut off RR spikes and Lag's, don't have enough of any 1 item to do them all out of the same material.

A little more progress today.

Got yesterdays tacked on feet welded solid. Tacked & welded another 12 today.

Dug out my crummy metal saw, gave it a new blade, a few adjustments and have it cutting. It is a hunk of junk and throws blades very often. Got it working a little better. Cutting is slow but Easy. Would like fast & easy both, but 1 out of 2 is OK. :D

Its a little better than watching grass grow or paint dry. Makes noise and now and then I have to change the part to be cut.
Pictured are about 7 beers worth of cutting.:thumbsup:

Tomorrow more welding and maybe more cutting.

The wall doesnt look very thick.. didnt you sau 1/8" ?? thats a wee bit over 3mm... So when the sheepsfoot go over a rock (creating a point load) the cylinder will dent..
I'd pour it full with concrete so it doesnt dent anymore. Most land rolls i know, are made of 10mm (3/8) sheet.

Hi Renze,
The end to be cut off is1/8", the tank its self is 3/16" or thicker. It has held up pretty well as a roller for about 4 years. A few small dents in the tank. Thicker would be nice, but this is what I have. It has several stobs on it from the original plumbing. None of them have bent in.

At times it will be used off my property, so will just use water to make it easier to drain & transport.

Wish now that I had used 6" spacing instead of 5". A lot less welding and cutting, plus a little more pressure on each foot. Too late now.

Given unlimited funds, tank would be thicker and a full 2' in diameter. All the feet would be 1" drill rod cut to 1.5".

It is starting to look like a mad porkypine now. Only about 8 more rows to go. First picture is 4 rows on second is with 6. All are welded solid.

There is one company that makes roller that uses oak for bearings. You could also use babbit metal for bearings.

Yes, a local disk harrow manufacturer also uses oak, which are boiled in oil. in-pit manure mixers also use oak as a lower bearing, because oak doesnt rot that hard when submerged in sh*t.
