New Snow Plow

I have a 55 gal drum to fill with concrete and add a few goodies like a receiver hitch,Chainsaw scabbard, places for chains and gas and oil. I will also put in some pipe for hand tools. Do you guys think that is enough weight for a 3240? I'll probably fill all but 4 or 5 inches of the barrel. Any other ideas?

Jeff

IMO yes it's enough weight, Maybe to much, how many HP is a 3240?

I would think 1/2 or 3/4 of the drum would be enough.

Foggy, I like how you mounted the frame on the backside of the QA plate so it doesn't stick out so far. Let us know how it works out on the tractor if you could.

Jeff

You could make yours just like Foggy's with out much difficulty.

I agree, the geometry of that design is better. Then you could make it rigid, or use the chain like he did. I was gonna say by making it rigid you have the advantage of down pressure. But with his design, even with the chain you would have down pressure. So it's the best of both worlds, down pressure when you need it and a chain for float, for the majority of your plowing.

Another benefit is his can not fold back like yours can. if you push to hard on a snow bank your plow will start to ride up and without any type of stop could come way up out of any useful position and possibly hit the loader depending on the position of the plate.

32 HP but the lift capacity of the 3PH is 2650 lbs at 24" behind lift point. I have read that 55 gal drum with concrete weighs between 900 and 1000 lbs and it will be closer to centered on the pins .
I do have the back tires loaded so that will help. The tractor weighs 3250 + loader at 1168 + loaded tires at approximatly 600 lbs. So I think another 1000 lbs off the back should be allright.

good gosh,a metal cutting blade from wal mart. (4.99)(2) in a circular saw will rip it right down.A chisel will spread it open further to be hammered on.. tight fit ..

As a rule of thumb concrete weighs 145 lbs. per cubic foot. A word caution about 3 pt lift specs: the published maximum typically occurs at only one particular height during the lift range. The maximum sustained lift through the entire up stroke may up to 25% less than the peak lifting force.

I have a CT335 which is very similar in size and performace to your 3240. From experience I can tell you that you will know when a 900 lb. weight shifts from side to side on the 3 point. I would encourage you to limit the counterweight to 1000 lbs.

With 900 lbs of hitch weight and over 900 lbs of rimguard, I have no problems with rear wheel lift or traction.

I agree plus,
All the ballast you can carry won't make up for chains in the traction arena.

I recomend a medium amount of ballast plus chains, turn your tractor into a bulldozer

Yea, looks great.

I would like to chang the subject a bit. What is the difference between a snow plow and a "pusher"?
Seems like they both move snow off your drive way.

Here is a pic of my snow pusher nckennedy,

Pushers are usually used for parking lots. This one has a "pullback" feature,a seperate cutting edge on the top leading edge.

Not sure how much more that plow weighs than the bucket that's been removed, but I would think about adding some weight to the front. Maybe a ballast box on the front frame. With the plow angled and that far out front, I suspect yaw angle (front wheel traction) is going to be more of an issue than rear wheel traction.

Too much rear ballast, aft of the rear axle, will take weight off the front axle, which is not what you want in this situation. Adding weight on both end should work to your advantage.

I would say the plow and bucket are comparable in weight but the plow sticks farther out so with leverage it weighs more. I think I'll change the mounting point to the back of the QA plate like Foggy did so the plow is not way out there. I did some preliminary measuring and I think I can move it about 18" back and still have full angling of the plow. I think that would make a big difference in plowing.

I did make my ballast barrel over the weekend and it turned out nice. 8- 80 lb bags of quickcrete and mixed in a 75 lb bag of mortar and sand I had laying around.
Being a bricklayer I have some time to get some of these projects done since it's been raining every other day. No money but lots of time. :(:(
