Tires New tires for my PT

JJ,

All the 18XX that I have seen don't use spacers...

All the best,

Peter

I think that PT may have changed the design for the dual wheels at some point. On my 1845, purchased in 2002, the wheels have a large offset but also use a spacer between the two wheels. I think the spacer is several inches (a wheel would have to be removed to measure it)--it is not simply a plate.

This is who made my wheels. If you send me all the specs for the wheel you want, I will take it over there and get a quote. or you can call them, and maybe fax your data.

I think the only way you can get by is with a wheel similar to the bud wheels like on my box van, those go on the hub face to face. On the kind of wheels that we use, you have to have a spacer, because the center plate can not bolt up face to face. Therefore, the spacer.

I have been collecting these over the years. Some of them are Ditch Witch tires and rims.

I thought I should post this here as it is directly related...

I've identified rims and hardware necessary to dualie up my PT 2445 to slope mower...

Now I'm looking into buying and mounting eight 26 x 12 x 12 tubeless lug tires, six ply or better. One question that has come up is to (glycol) load or not to load... thoughts?

I would say no, as they are easier to plug when dry. Although I would add Gemplers Bullet Proof to each tire.

For me, my problem with the dualies are as follows...

Valve Stems broken off constantly

Debris jammed between the tires, which can cause the debris to jam the rims.

Lower inflation for severe slopes can cause tire flatness.

I have gemplers, but honesly my problems are bigger than what gemplers can fix...

Can you post info on the tires and rims you have found?

I'm planning to get adapters, rims studs and lug nuts from Power Trac. I'm undoubtedly paying a bit more than what I might pay elsewhere but feel the scales balance with the straight talk, advice and fair treatment I've received. I'm still pondering this equation:

eight 26 12 12 (unloaded) 6 ply lug tires - including mounting = $ 1050
eight rims, four extensions, twenty studs & lug nuts from PT = $ 1350
T3409 72" rough cut mower with T-12 plate = $ 2300
Unanswered questions as to tilt seat arragnement (Estimate) = $ 250

TOTAL to convert PT2445 to dualie equiped 72" slope mower = $ 4950

I'm thinking of spot welding stubs of 3" pipe around valve stems. Tubes or no tubes?

Is a 72" mower wide enough? I would think you might need the larger mower.

Just FYI, the welding of the stubs for me was a bit of pickle. You have to cut and play wit the pipe covering quite a bit. Because the rims PT sells place the valve stem in an awkward position, so the stub you use has to be short, cut at odd angles to allow you to fill up the tire and not have impact with either the body of the tractor OR the wheel motor (The wheel motor was my downfall).

And that brings up a point. Make sure you test fit your wheel over your wheel motor before you weld. It is faily tight tolerance on my PT.

Finally, I have gone back to tubes. It has reduced my flats, but it has also increased the cost of them getting repaired (I still get them).

My land is in bad shape, it was logged, and everything was left to lay on the ground, so driving around you pick stuff up all the time. Also my rims are pretty hashed and I think due to how the lips of the rims have been bent they "attract" damage.
