If the temps are in the 60's-70's, try 30 seconds. If that doesn't work, try 45, and so on. Just be sure and release the glow plug button, before cranking. Hopefully, the glow plugs are functional..!!

You keep cranking that starter for 5 mins straight and you soon WILL be needing a new starter!

get yourself a shop/service manual for the tractor. it will give details to trouble shoot along with exploded diagrams and how to tear it apart, check stuff and put it back together.

most tractor manufactures you can find "online part manuals" for free online, that give very basic diagrams just enough to double check part, and get a part number

owners / operators manual. = check fluids, how to use machine, general safety warnings, were grease zerks are, when to do oil changes and like.

with new to you, used tractor, filter check (oil, air, hydraulic oil, fuel) and see if they need replaced. (air filter there is a chance it has a inner and outer air filter)

check the battery, and its terminals and cables for any corrosion / chunks of insulation missing.

see about draining old fuel and putting new in. ((careful diesel units and/or even gas you may need to prime the fuel and fuel going were it suppose to))

check general wiring. good chance it been ripped out / broken off / cut / damaged *been there done that* in fixing.

there might be chance instead of glow plug, there is a "ether" or some such maybe for a cold start kit installed. and ether needs to be added.

if not already get yourself a larger 110v battery jumper / charger. those little car/truck jumpers not enough power.

check your water level of the batteries.

find your radiator, hydraulic oil cooler (looks like a smaller version of radiator), and transmission oil cooler (another small radiator) make sure it is not full of gunk / dust / weeds / mud.

make sure you got your hydrualic lines all straighten out and not trying to raise FEL or curl the bucket, or something on rear in with the 3pt. when trying to start unit.

double check any wiring harness connections. (larger plugs with a bunch of wires) they can come loose and corroded.

==========
most above is general yada yada. but you might find something.

My son didn't make himself clear when he told me that. He said he would crank it for maybe 30 seconds at a time for a total of 5 min. I got it started today after it got in the mid 70's. I need to go thru the glow plug circuit as I don't believe it's working at all. I have the parts manual and individual repair manuals form IH but they don't tell you much as far as trouble shooting. I have a owners manual on order and as soon as it arrives will be reading it from front to back. What I really need is a wiring diagram for it. The parts manual shows colors of the wires that are connected to individual components but doesn't show the actual power flow. One thing no one has answered is should the starter just keep cranking even when the starter button is released. It stops after it starts but until the engine starts to run it will keep cranking???

Thank you for the reply and I have found it useful. I know there are glow plugs cause I can see them in the side of the engine but just haven't been able to test them. Problem = glow plugs on left side and glow plug button on right side about 6 feet apart. Wife HATES the tractor so it's going to be hard to get her help. I did find one encouraging thing thou, the charging system does work which I was sure was bad. :cool2: The top link for the ganon (see, I am learning the terminology) which is a hyd. cylinder is leaking like a sieve and besides the glow plug problem is all that is keeping me from using my new (to me) tractor. I've got a couple of berms to build up between my house and the wash running thru my property and also my neighbor who is a widow and can't do things like that.

What in the blue blazes is a resistor assy indicator and why is it in the glow plug circuit? Is it suppose to let me know the glow plug circuit is operating at the time?

G'day mate the resistor indicator they are talking about is the chrome nut with the holes in it, it is basically a heavy wire coil in there that glows as you warm up the plugs when it is orange then the glow plugs should be hot. Some of these system the indicator is in line with the glow plugs and if it is burnt out then the glow plugs won't work.

So I can bypass it right?

Well, I checked it out and the resistor has continuity so it something between it and the plugs or it could be the plugs.

It has power to the plugs so figure the glow plugs are bad. How hard is it to replace the brake discs on the beast? It doesn't stop worth a cr*p! My owners manual will be here tomorrow but doubt it says anything about repairs. I have the parts manual engine manual, and hydr manual but no service manual. Found a digital down loadable service manual on Ebay for $30. Anybody bought one that way and is it a good option?
