Couldn't have said it better myself. In my case tho, it was not meant in boredom or indifference just a 'we agree to disagree'. I don't think you're wrong, I just don't agree but I respect your opinion :).
Reminds me of a guy I used to work with, he always used to say, "You wanna do it my way or your stupid way" :)

Meh, having installed and having to work on them I'm not.
They're great...if you use them before you get stuck and use them under a certain speed on the hwy, (can't remember the actual speed but I think it was quite low but I could be wrong which is not unusual LOL)
Don't spin the begesus out of them if you do get stuck without having them deployed first at which time if you're stuck you remain stuck because they won't throw properly under the tires. If they remain unused for any amount of time they seize up, or at least they do in the ice/snow/salt belt and where else would you use them. They are not cheap to repair.
IMHO good ole tire chains are the best, a lot more work than flipping a switch but all good things are worth working for. My 2 cents worth, that's Canuk bucks btw not US :)
Yep, regular full reinforced chains are much better. But, when just being used to prevent getting stuck on snow or iced up roads when they are working they are wonderfull. I never run fast with chains on anyways and the auto's were good at 25 mph. If I need chains on 25 mph is more then fast enough. At over 70 I don't care to fight with chains on the side of the road, a push of a button I can handle much easier.

Our school busses have ‘em. They are called “on spot” down in my parts.
Goofy if you ask me, but when you’re spending taxpayer money, well who cares?

I have to say I’ve only heard of them one time and I’ve never seen them in application in real life

Many of our school busses have them, many of the fire departments trucks have them, also some of the ambulances run them. Some private individuals also use them they are very handy, nice on farm trucks when fields get greasy on top, especially froze and then the sun thaws the top inch, allows keeping momentum up and getting back on hard roads.

Wonder if the auto chains would work on a tractor? Jon

Automatic chains, who’d of thunk it. I’ve been in the mountains where they stop to chain up, get over the pass, unchain, then get to the next pass and repeat.

I have never seen a diagram of how they work before. I had just heard about them one time a few years back. I ran a warehouse, so I dealt with a lot of truck drivers and they were telling me about them.

I was told (not knowing how accurate they were) that they don’t work very well, but everybody has their own opinion

I don't think the tire speed would be sufficient to throw the chains out and far enough under the tires,
on a truck they need to be applied before the vehicle stops and is stuck and spinning.
I have seen them used on several vehicles and had them on one, they do not replace a set of conventional chains but they do work quite well for moderate use. On a farm truck engaging them as turning off a hard surface roadway into a field they enabled continuing forward and around in the field and back out to the roadway several times and not having to run conventional chains several miles down a hard surface road.
