Hello everyone,

I have been lurking here for some time. I have been reading and appreciating all of the posts here. This is a very active community.

Having recently registered, I would like to give a little background on myself.

I grew-up on a central NY "hobby farm". My dad raised a small number of Herfords and my mom's horses. He also has some very large gardens. The tractors and implements he has were old then and are probably considered antiques now. He has IH A, Super C, and M tractors. He has numerous implements, most are pretty old. The hay baler use to have its own two cylinder engine. It was replaced with a PTO when he purchased the M. He did have an even older, four-cylinder baler, that bit the dust. It is now part of a maple syrup still. All tractors are still in use today. I used most of this equipment, but was most familiar with the Super C tractor.

At this time, I also worked a neighbor's Angus farm. He was a Ford man, and I had experience driving 8N and 9N models. While I also helped out on numerous other dairy farms, most of this was unloading hay wagons and stacking hay. Never got to drive their big air-conditioned Deeres.

Fastforward about 20 years, I now live in a rural area in the Southern Tier of NY. About a year ago, I purchased 60 acres of land that surrounds my house. A local dairy farmer was selling out his farm. He was getting too old to actively work it, and his children decided against farming. About 20 acres is open fields that I let a local dairy farmer use, as long as he maintains them. There are about 4-5 acres of tall grass fields, that use to be pasture. The rest is hills, streams, and woods. Future plans calls for a pond or two, plus tree planting, and maybe a garden.

My family, wife, two children, and two dogs, enjoy the open country around us. We enjoy watching the deer, rabbits, and numerous other animals. My wife has recently seen a black bear, not too far from us. I have some "roads" cut through the woods, that serve as hiking and access trails. I am not a tractor owner yet, but will be soon. See more on that below. Primary uses for the tractor will be mowing that old pasture, maintaining trails, clearing new ones, help maintaining a dike, some yard work, and numerous other odd jobs.

Now for the controversial part. The tractor that I am purchasing is a Chinese Jinma 254. I know that the general opinion by many here is that this is not a very good tractor. Well, for numerous reasons, and one major one being cost, I have decided to go this way. Please be gentle with your replies to any of my tractor issues that maybe posted here in the future. J This was not a haphazard decision. I did talk with and exchange email with many Jinma owners. Most had very positive experiences. Also parts do not seem to be an issue. As some have pointed out, many people are putting their name on the same tractor. I have found two dealers near my area that have a good supply of parts. One is only a half-hour away. About as close as most of the major dealers. I will also be accumulating my own parts stockpile. The tractors are a very basic design and will be relatively easy to work on. I will be performing all maintenance and repairs.

With the tractor, will be a Chinese FEL. I will be doing mostly light duty work with the FEL. I have a trailer that will be used with this tractor, and have plans to purchase a rotary cutter and rear blade. I am sure that I will also purchase other implements as jobs present them selves. I will be taking delivery about the end of the third week in July.

As long as there is interest, I will report my experience with this equipment here, good, bad or indifferent. I will help others with whatever Jinma issues they may have. I will not be bragging-up the Jinma here, only reporting my particular experiences. I will also participaint in many of the other forums here, including Rural Living.

Well, that's about it for now. I look forward to chatting with many of you.

John, when something relatively new comes on the market, I think probably most of us are afraid to try it for awhile, until we see how it does (especially if something similar, or even from the same foreign country was bad), and of course we'll never know unless someone tries it. Some turn out good; some bad. So, welcome to the forum and we'll look forward to hearing of your experiences with the Jinma; hope it does turn out good - I figure more good competition will help keep prices down.

John,

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the great intro!

I have no particular "anything" about the Jinma, but I will be interested in your experiences. I hope that they all turn out good. Don't forget that 20 years ago (or so), Kubota was in the position of being "brand X". They kept at it, built a good reputation, and are now one of the big guns. That's the way it works....

Good luck with the Chinese tractor. Hope it works out OK. I'd be interested to know how the price compares with the same Kubota or JD tractor - that is, PTO HP, hydraulics specs, FEL and 3-point capacity, and transmission selection. Like how it would compare to one of the manual transmission L Kubotas. I'd like an idea if we're talking $6,000 savings or really only $2,000 when you compare apples to apples.

Hi Bird, I have enjoyed your many posts. Since I am swallowing the pill, I don't mind being the guinia pig, such that others can learn from. Most likely picking it up around 7/21. The first week will be assembly and check-out. I will open a new thread during that week, and update as I go. See Ya.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

Alan L, I did a quick check of the L2600DT(looked closest to Jinma 254) specs on Kubota's site. There wasn't allot there but they did look comparable to the Jinma. Hydraulics and 3 pt capacity were not there. The Jinma has a dual stage VS single stage of L2600. You can see Jinma specs at Nortrac, Maverick, Iron Horse, Taskmaster, and other Jinma sites, to compare further. Specs as in many things won't tell the whole story. Only a rough comparison, at best. I am not expecting a Kubota or JD equivelent. Most dealers run the Jinma around 7.5K and some posts here indicate around 10.5K for L2600DT. I did not price the L2600 at a local dealer but they were generally higher on the ones I had checked in the past. Most Jinma dealers offer loaders by Great Bend, Koyker, or others. They run around 3K when purchased with tractor. I am working with a direct importer, and paying a good deal less than the prices above. But with most things, less means more risk. Time will tell if the risk is worth it.

Hello John S., yea I'm pretty new here to. But I've learned quite a bit off this board. As you can tell from some of the recent posts that this isn't a bash um up board. Guess that speaks for itself.

As far as your brand of tractor as long as your happy in the end that is what counts. I like Kubotas so thats what I own. I've put quite a few hard hours on them and they have held up well. So as they say time will tell.

Welcome
Gordon

Hi John, It appears as if you have been researching this issue quite thoroughly and as you say, are going into it with your eyes open. I suspect that you know what to expect from the Jinma, except maybe longivity. Thanks for volunteering to update us on your experiences, and I hope they are all pleasant ones.

Hey John, good luck with the ChiCom machine!! I usually go against what most figure is the norm myself, and as long as you do your homework it works out most times! Any manufacturer can make a lemon. The main thing to remember is to not ask the machine to do more than it can safely do. Every machine has a breaking point,no matter where in the world it was built.
