New Utility Trailer + Wimpy Truck

Most of our eight acres is fenced with 3 board wood horse fence. However, there’s a section in the back that still needs fenced in and we want to create another paddock so we’re looking at about 700ft of new fencing. That’s 140 16ft boards and 93 8ft posts. I also have at least a dozen dead pine trees that need to come down and be hauled to the dump. I don’t have a fireplace so firewood serves me no purpose.

With the quantity you're ordering, someone will deliver. As far as the wood goes, my wife burns whatever organics I'm cutting up as we go in our fire pit. It doubles as an ash bath for the chickens. They love it; it's like their spa weekend getaway.

I get it, I take our 16' tandem to the lumber yard all the time, mostly because I have it and I like doing it. The two yards close to us will, for free, deliver almost any quantity of anything as long as you are flexible with time frame or can plan ahead. I had a lift of plywood delivered here (just so I could have the moffett put it where I wanted) and the next drop was to one of my neighbors for six 2x4x8 and 10 bags of wood pellets. Ask about delivery and then buy a proper trailer when you buy a proper truck, if you still think you need it.

you can get a 12k trailer used for 1500 to 2000 dollars. that will tow empty or lightly loaded behind the ridgeline. then trade/sell the ridgeline for a better tow vehicle. trailers are very simple to maintain and fix any problems they have.my point is you dont need to buy a new trailer.

I’ll have to show my wife this post. We have 18 chickens and my it’s like they’ve become pets. Last week I somehow got wrangled into giving them baths in a 5 gallon bucket. Don’t ask, I just take orders. They take their dust baths in our flower beds which ticks me off. I’ll have to see about making an ash bath for them.

Back to trailers, ok I guess I can get the fence lumber delivered. I’ll look into smaller and or lighter alternatives to take cut up trees and brush to the dump.

LOL, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone bathing chickens, at least live ones. I'm like you, though, I just follow orders (usually).

However, a 12K trailer is 7K over the Ridgelines GVWR limit, even if it's empty. Like RyeThomas wrote:
I agree, no way on an 8? I live in Nova like you and I have been pulled over when I致e done everything right. Everyone delivers these days. Used trailers do not hold value. I would save up and do it once when the time is right and buy exactly what you need.

You can be pulled over for anything in No. Va. and a truck rated for 5K can't legally pull a 12K trailer EMPTY.

/edit
Heck since Harbor Freight started selling trailers again the OP could get their 1720 lb. capacity trailer for $450 and start hauling small loads. Then do what it seems a lot of people in this area do, put a sheet of plywood on it and sell it for $500 on CL.

I had a thread a few years ago on 5K single axle trailers I've been looking for one to haul my B7610 about 4 miles between two of my houses. I gave up and we drive it back and forth.

Personally, I wouldn't touch those HF trailers with a 10ft safety chain. There's a place for buying bottom of the barrel cost but trailers isn't one of them.

If you grab the manual you'll see they're only rated to 45mph but see people going 75mph+ down the freeway at least once a week with one of them loaded up.

Buy the trailer you want for the long term and then limit yourself on what you tow with the Honda. I think people are quoting weights of both bumper and goose neck trailers (which are different). If you start off light you can get a feel for just what you can tow with your Honda but it's probably not going to be much. But you will have the trailer, which I think you really want, and other than maybe tires, will still be in great shape years from now. If you can afford one piece of equipment now it'll be nice to get one purchase out of the way so you can move on to the next piece when you are ready.

Again, he's subject to being hauled over by the law pulling a 10K GVWR trailer with a vehicle only rated for 5k, even if the trailer is empty.

So is it against the law to tow a trailer that has a higher capacity than your truck is rated for even if it’s empty? I’m new to trailers so I have no idea.
