Why the big controversy on New vs. Used?

How many of you bought a VCR for $1,000.00 when they first came out?? Today, they are disposable amongst many other things!!! Where did that money go??

How many of you stopped and paid double, if not more, for a role of film, the wifes sheers (she got a run), or batteries at a convenience store when you were "on your way"?? Did you want to pay that price? NO. Did you, YES. Why????

These are just two examples of hundreds that we've all done because we needed or wanted them.

I never think about resale when I buy something, EVER! Do you really think your going to get back what you paid for it? Not likely. If I'm buying something it's because I need it, (maybe want it) period . Whether it is a "New or Used" whatever, you'll never know what your getting until you take possession of it. I've had good and bad experiences with both as well as millions of others I'm sure.

In my opinion, to many worry about the "what if". Cross that bridge if and when you have to whether it is "NEW OR USED"!

One last point from me that I could not keep focused on because of last nights basketball game. I kind of wonder about the fuss over new/use, payments or non payments. The tractor is a tool/toy. Primarily a tool that allows me to be much more efficient. I have already accomplished jobs that never would have gotten done had the tractor not been here. Savings and enjoyment priceless! On the other hand how many have bought boats, motorcycles, atv, rv, airplanes, big screen tv's, etc. and now they either sit outside or inside and weather and depreciate. Used or new, it was mostly an emotional purchase and that was not really needed. Same with the tractor. If it was strictly an business purchase and you really did a lot of bean counting, we all probably should have rented. But if you are going to own property, maintanence is a given and if you have another job to support you habits, you need it when you need it. As I get older, some of my toys are starting to leave and I enjoy being home working with my tractor, watching my big screen tv and playing golf with Scott or going to a movie with my wife. I agree mostly with what you say, however I like no payments so that if I lose my job and cannot find another one that pays as well I do not lose my home/farm. I can always make enough money to pay for utilities and food. Life is good when I am working on my farm with my tractor or other equipment or animals/crops,etc and I want to keep it that way. I guess I am un-american in the respect that I do not like debt. And yes I have toys too, just paid for and they don't have to be the latest and greatest. My main TV is only a 27 inch, but I have direct tv + a workshop TV and basement TV. Have boat, camper, etc all bought used and paid cash. Not all new and shiny but works for me. I might not keep up with the Jones's , but my life is less stressfull and more enjoyable, for me at least.

Oh and new tractors break sometimes too.

I like the part of your philosophy that acknowledges you'll never finish all your projects. However, the part that tries to get full value out of home improvements is doomed to fail, with few exceptions, you don't increase the value by the same amount as the cost.

Loved that baryard fence, that fella must have had a lot of kids, our barn stone work was dry layed, couldn't spend the time using mortar. Sure is pretty when it is done though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tend to buy used but not always. The best time to buy anything is when you feel you don't really need it right now. I have a Kubota 3710 and Case-IH DX29 compacts. Both bought used with very low hours. I like to buy used items only a few years old. Still very reliable and often still have some remaining warranty. You just have to be patient and wait for the good deal. The DX29 was purchased for $9000 with R4 tires, aux hydraulics, canopy, front weights and had 62 hours and was a 2001 model. Many compacts get less 100 hours/year. Most of my attachments are used but in very good shape and many less than half price of new. Newspaper, auctions, and freinds are all good sources. Look for the little used items which have often been stored inside. Many owners treat their equipment better than the dealer. If it looks negelected or abused, it was. In most of my purchases, I try to decide if I could sell the same item in 6-12 months, could I expect to get a similar or slightly less amount of money than what I paid for it. Do your research prior to buying used. Check prices of similar items that are new. Ask friends or TBN people for advice. Check out price guides of tractors etc.
One of the downsides of buying used is that you often need to have the $ ready to pay for the item and financing is often not a option. Most new stuff such as automobiles I buy will either have rebates and/or low interest financing before I buy.

I have been pondering this same question. I have entertained the idea of buying both new and used, and after much reading and getting input from posters and local acquaintances, I have decided that I don't have the time or especially the knowledge to buy aused tractor. I need a tractor now that will work for me, not one that I have to work on continually. Chris you are right on the mark. I do not need time consuming hobbies at this point in my life.

Yikes!... I think you are confusing the word 'used' with 'abused'. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif My Nh 1920 was 3 years used when I picked it up at the nh dealer.. I've only done oil / filter changes to it, and added a battery.... It mows 10 acers every month in the growing season.. not to mention some discing and plowing, and maneuer pushing, and pasture dragging... To get any more maintenance free.. I would have to hire the work out.. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You can by a good used machine... you can also get bad new machines... part of it is luck.. part of it is knowing what to look for when you buy..

As with anything.. go with what you and your wallet, and tool box are happy with.

Financing was a problem for me I have 45 acres that needs attention and a Poultry house with Perdue that always needs attention. I have to work a day job for affordable insurance.
I wanted to buy used but no one could meet my needs money wise,tractors are an expensive but necassary tool. So I bought new. Used tractors that will scoot in and out of chicken house.Be able to run a 25kv generator( proably the most important). Mow hay with a 7ft 3pthitch disc mower and other various farm work arent cheap used.
Its looking at your needs finances and wants my dad loves to buy used tractors to fix up and use. But I dont have the time. Well thats my ramble.

Gosh.. I heard that one... can't fault you there. I do nearly the same myself.. Day job for the bennies.. and them lots of self-employment work.. and my hobby farm... I havn't slept in years...
