New vs. Used

When you are retired and livin' on 2/3 of the pay you got when workin', payments for loans are a bad thing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When I bought my farm it came with an old 50hp tractor. They also really wanted to sell me their old skid steer but it wasn’t safe to be around so I wouldn’t buy it. I never considered a new tractor (in this case skid steer) but the used ones were about 12K at 12% for 4 years. A new one was 24K at 0% for 5 years. I had just used all my cash to buy the farm and I had to get a loader so for $76 a month more and an extra year of payments I bought the new skid steer. When I bought my Kubota M9000DTL I was looking for a low profile tractor. I didn’t find anything like it in the used market for sale so I bought new again and again got a low interest rate (2.99% for 60mo).

When considering used vs new I believe you have to consider your own situation. I feel that as a 33 year old new commercial farmer it was the right choice to buy new over time. On the other had my neighbor is about to retire and has cash in the bank. In his case he would get a much better deal buying used with cash.

Just my 2 cents
Eric
