Bought a new L3830 HST w R4, 723 FEL, 60" woods tiller, quick-tach bucket, rear hydraulics, and "beet juice" fluid in the rear tires. Was heavily leaning toward 3430 but upsized late in the game. Paid $23,650. Fair price for the package w/ tiller? Dealer said he gave me his cost for upsizing to 3830 ($900 approx)

Should be delivered next week - I can't wait to play with the snow piles (gently of course during break-in)

I plan on using the tractor for plowing snow and maintain about 5 acres of food plots for deer. I've got 20 acres at home and 200 acres at camp about 20 miles away - mostly all wooded.

Several questions:

1. A friend has a 4330 and suggested draft control. Dealer said not needed and steered me away from it. Plan on occasionally using a 2 bottom plow and disc but mainly tiller after initial sod-breaking. Any comments on draft control?

2. The dealer said they use "beet juice" for the rear tire fluid. Apparently biodegradable / less corrosion than "brine" based solution. Is "beet juice" some slang term for a synthetic ballast fluid, a tradename, or ?

3. I want to add some worklights to the ROPS. Where is the best place to tap-into the electrical system? I would prefer the lights are switched with the ignition key (they turn off when the tractor is turned off).

4. I lightly looked at a few other brands (Mahindra, Branson, JD, New Holland). I thought one dealer told me that the PTO shuts off when the 3pt is raised to avoid damage of PTO shaft operating at an angle. Dealer said Kubota does not but he said it's not a problem to run PTO w/ 3pt up. Did I misunderstand the other dealer or do some CUT have a cut-off for PTO when 3pt is lifted?

5. Why is it that most of the time when I type in www.tractorsbynet.com that I am directed to a New Holland dealership (Corriher)?

6. Anyone have any experience with a tree shovel on the front loader? http://www.qualityweldingservice.com/treeshovel.html

Looks like it would work good for trees as well as picking rocks from fields.

Enough for now.

Some brands/tractors with independant PTO have a manual or automatic PTO switch.
(Example) On my Kioti DK 35 you turn a switch on the dash to engage the PTO. You have a choice of manual, off or automatic.
If set to Manual the PTO will run if the 3 point is up or down, it runs until the PTO switch is turned off.
If set on Automatic the PTO with turn itself off when the 3 point is lifted and turn itself back on when the 3 point is lowered.

You could always add it later. I have found on the last two tractors I had that had draft control, it is rarely if ever used. When I run my boxscraper with the rippers down, I will have to on occasion lift the 3 pt lever to raise or I should say lighten the load some. I think making it an option instead of having to pay for it is fine, it is something most of us rarely use.

2. The dealer said they use "beet juice" for the rear tire fluid. Apparently biodegradable / less corrosion than "brine" based solution. Is "beet juice" some slang term for a synthetic ballast fluid, a tradename, or ?

I personally don't ballast my tires. Even the L3830 will notice the load when pulling up hills with a mower for instance. I filled my own to try it out, found no advantage myself either in traction or stability. Again, you can get it without and always add it yourself later. I won't be ballasting mine. I also use a 1000lb boxscraper as a counterweight for my loader among other things. I always mow with the loader off. It takes me less then a minute to remove it and about 2 minutes to put it back on. The beet juice will add a little over 1000lbs of weight. I also have R4's.

3. I want to add some worklights to the ROPS. Where is the best place to tap-into the electrical system? I would prefer the lights are switched with the ignition key (they turn off when the tractor is turned off).

Right below the PTO lever and seat is a 2 prong female adapter. It's green. One wire is ground, the other a hot wire that goes on/off with the key.

I would not want a PTO shutting off when you raise the PTO. A post hole digger for example would not work nearly as well like that.

I just have my discussion page bookmarked, never had that. Conspiracy I suppose

6. Anyone have any experience with a tree shovel on the front loader? http://www.qualityweldingservice.com/treeshovel.html

No I have not. I would suspect they would need to be small trees.

When you get your tractor, don't be afraid to run it as high as 2500 RPM. They only suggest you not run it full throttle which about 2700. Use M or L range. I run my loader around 2000 RPM, works welll there.

I'm new here and just researching tractors so can't contribute much but if you take the s out our your url you will be fine. This forum's URL is www.tractorbynet.com notice tractor singular.....hope this helps. This dealership is using every trick in the book to improve their chances of selling you blue.

Very good! I did not see that. I don't blame them. Obviously they know TBN is out there.

#1. I'd be surprised if you have any need or use for draft control.

#2. Also knows as Rim Guard.

#3. B series have the wire for that purpose, already fused, hot with key on, etc. under the seat. I'll bet the L series has it somewhere convenient.

#4. I never hard of a PTO that cut off when you raised the 3-point, and would not want it, but that's not to say such doesn't exist.

#5. Yep, leave the "s" out and you get to the right place.

#6. No experience at all, but I can see how it might be quite handy at times.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. The tip about the light hook-up and the "tractor"bynet.com are especially helpful. I live in Michigan's U.P. about 60 miles North of Green Bay. Very warm today (42F) so I pulled the camper out of the garage and made room for the new baby next week.

I agree with RAT except that tractor engines are meant to run at RATED RPM. There is no "break-in" needed. Just observe the service intervals and don't get fancy with oil additives or fuel additives. I use Kubota UDT, Mystic JT8 15-40 and good old No.2 off road diesel

Your engine will have a sweet spot, usually around 2100 rpm. Every engine is a little different, but you will find it. It is where you have maximum torque rise and the engine is the most efficient. Just set it there and run it.

I use my Kubota in a farming enviroment and it typically runs steady for 8-10 hours at a stretch wit just a stop for fuel and my lunch of course.

I absolutely would not want a PTO that shut off when the 3 point was raised. My PTO clutch would probably last less than one 8 hour day at that rate. Talk about a "dummy" feature, that is it.

"Just set it there and run it."

I believe the Kubota manual says to vary the RPMs during the break in period. I prefer to mix it up a bit.....at least during the first 50 hours or so.

I'm curious as to what Mfg, has this feature, where the 3 point always turns off when the 3 point is lifted ?
I'm not aware off anyone that has this feature..
I know there are some where you can set the 3 point to automatic shutoff if you want to, but the ones I know of also have manual position where the 3 point runs no matter where the 3 point is lifted..
If you want the PTO to run all the time you simply flip the switch to manual..

I've never heard of it either. Maybe they are talking about when you get up off the seat. Other then that, it would not make sense since not all things even use the 3 pt. setup in the down position with the PTO engaged.

RAT:

I bypassed the seat switch or OPD too. It's a PITA, literally. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
