NH1925 Battery

I have a original boomer model 1925 (year 1998) with a battery problem. Factory battery leaked such that it corroded the hood opener...to the point that I had to unbolt the latch and soak it in WD40 to get it to work again. I'd like to replace the battery with a sealed one...sort of like the Optima model...but they look too wide to fit in the small battery shelf in front of the radiator. Any ideas or suggestions?

Pretty sure the larger boomers are all using a 24 or 24F and if you can fit it a 27 or 27F size would be even better. Any maintenance free will work just fine as long as it's sealed reasonable well. No need to go to anything exotic.

Whatever battery you use, make sure it is not too full. I'd even suggest you leave it a little low. My tractor had a battery acid leak and several NH techs mentioned that the batteries were so full that they overflowed when sitting outside in the sunlight. ...my two cents

I also have a model 1925 and just replaced the original battery. What I did was take the old battery to Car Quest with some measurements and found a battery that would fit in the space I had to work with. I found a battery that would work that had 550 cold cranking amps (plenty for the 1925)The new battery was a little bit shorter than the original, so I had to put some washers on the hold down bolts (since the lower threads had been eaten away by acid damage). Just make sure that the positive and negative terminals are on the correct side of the replacement battery.

Jim, did your's leak because it was cracked or otherwise defective, or just too full? I saw a little liquid around the top of mine the other day and just wondered if NH is filling them to much or what? ...Duane

Duane, my battery had no cracks in the case, so it must have been too full. I'm not really happy with the engineering of the battery box. I'd like to see a fluid collection tray with a drain hose, but if I want that, I'll probably have to design it myself. Tractor batteries sure live a tough life, being jostled/bumped and taking shocks (without the benefit of shock absorbers), not to mention being operated at all kinds of angles on hillsides and such. I really think the only good insurance is to check often and assume that you may have to do some sheet metal maintenance around the area of the battery during the life of a tractor. Annual maintenance might include wire brush, acid neutralizer, and paint. I do wish there was a better way. Any ideas?/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Does anybody know of a gel battery that will fit...I looked at the specs on the Optima batteries and they are just a bit too wide to fit inbetween the radiator and the hood latch.

I never had any similar trouble with my 1720. Wonder what is going on with the Boomers. Again, maybe NH just has a little too much fluid in them.

Lifeline Batteries while not gel, look like the next best thing and they show a size 24 battery.
