Nissan Titan Cummins

Wow, this would be great for Nissan. Around here they cant even give away a Titan. With a compact diesel they's sell every one they could get.

Plus it would light a fire under Toyota and Ford to bring over their diesels.

As much as the idea intrigues me, buying a diesel truck, It's hard to justify the extra cost, unless you tow often.

There is no way I would buy one that only produced 200hp. I have no desire to go backwards in power. Sure it has a good amount of torque, but I can buy a gas engine 1/2 ton that produces nearly 400hp and 400 lbft of torque. Yes, they get higher mileage, but here in Kalifornia, I see diesel at $4.79 a gallon and that few extra mpg you get, doesn't seem so tempting.

Add to that, more frequent oil changes, more oil to change, fuel filters to change on a frequent basis, and it really steals the thunder of a good diesel, much less, a weak one.

Something like the GM 4.5L Duramax is more like I would expect, at 320hp and 520lbft of torque, plus GM is claiming mpg that pretty well matches what the tiny cummins puts out. I cannot understand When todays gas engine trucks, with engines in the 5.6 and 5.7L range, can tow 10,000lbs +, a new truck with a diesel that tows only 7-8000 isn't very appealing.

My '06 Tundra with a 4.7L engine tows 7,000lbs and gets me 17-18 hwy. That's a double cab 4WD truck. bought it used in '06 and have yet had to do anything other than change the oil and tires. I have not even had to take it back to the dealership.

Now I can see that engine in something like a Jeep wrangler, where one is not so worried about hot rod acceleration, but could really use all that torque.

Exactly. You will still need more than a comprable gas engine but much less than the 5 gallons or so you need now.

Keep in mind, a little 4-cylinder diesel will not take the 3 gallons of motor oil these large V8's use or an oil filter the size of a muffler.

I just completely and throughly disagree with you here. If you want a hot rod go buy a Pony Car, not a truck. This is exactly what the automakers need to do and a lot of people have been screaming for it for a long time.

Which 1/2 ton truck makes 400 ft-lbs? Name one?

Why would you have to change the oil and fuel filters more? There are people I know who go 10,000 miles between oil changes (I wouldn't) and with diesel the fuel won't go bad like in gas.

There are tons of trucks out there that will get 17-18 mpg on the hwy, but no fullsize trucks that will get 30+ mpg and still be capable of towing 6-8K on a regular basis.

I understand what you are saying but hey, the Titan is made in the US. I would bet it has as many American workers man hours put into it than the other 1/2 ton pickups if not more. About 2 years ago they had a article in USA today and the Tundra was the most "American Built" 1/2 ton followed by the F-150, Titan, GM, and Ram finishing last. Yes, I know the argument that the profits are sent back overseas but this is about putting people to work.

I am a proud Titan owner. When I bought it in 2008 it was in my opinion the best 1/2 ton truck on the market. Today, 2011, I would go back with the F-150.

Chris

Also folks need to remember that the Japanese can buy stock in Ford, and we can buy stock in Honda, etc.

I like this concept, but have paid for and oil change or regular maintenance on a diesel and quickly realized any fuel savings is eaten up quickly...
My TDI Jetta gets as much as 16000 km before requiring and oil change which offsets the expense of the change. 30% better bang for the buck more then recoups any maintenance costs. $200 a month equals $60 a month savings. But hey I am sold on diesel. 5.9 TDI in the truck as well:)

Ford, GM, Dodge, & Toyota. They all make 400# or more with Ford making 420 in the new 3.5L TT.

Yes, the Titan only makes 385 FT TQ but anyone who knows anything about trucks knows its not how much HP or TQ you make, its where you make it.

I'm totally sold on benefits of diesel vs. gasers. I just don't think fuel savings is as significant as some folks believe...engine longevity and efficiency are a few more reasons...
