Nissan Titan Cummins

Things have changed a lot in the last ten years; the dynamics are a lot different now.

When I got my Ram Cummins in 2001, diesel was 5-10 cents cheaper than regular in my area. And, my RAM with all the heavy duty package, low gears ect, got much better fuel mileage than my '89 Ford F250 with a 351 gasser.

Now, although they(diesels) make a ton of power, the gas engines are getting much better mileage. And, diesel is much more expensive than regular around here; usually more expensive than premium.

Given the conditions now in 2011, I would be pressed to pick a diesel vs gas motor. I used my truck more for towing ect when I first got it. Now, I take the 7000lb relatively lightweight 5th wheel out for 300 mile runs every couple of months. I could easily do that with a gasser, and run much cheaper regular fuel.

Part of the reason I got my 3/4 ton was to haul a large cabover camper. That is long gone. A 1/2 ton with tow package could haul my 5th wheel. And my tractor.

In regards to a 1/2 ton diesel, I sit in the slow lane when towing the tractor or the 5th wheel anyways; So what if it is not 400hp/700ftlbs if you could get 30mpg.

I'm totally sold on benefits of diesel vs. gasers. I just don't think fuel savings is as significant as some folks believe...engine longevity and efficiency are a few more reasons...

Toyota already has a large turbo-diesel V-8 for 4x drive. It is sold down-under. My understanding is that it will not pass emissions for some countrys.Maybe they can clean it up for the future? My self, i don't tow any-thing, and I liked 33 mpg, but did want air-conditioning too..

I like it! I would buy one. By the time that thing hit pavement every chip maker in North America would have something to upgrade power and fuel econony. Nice 4" Exhaust, cold air intake, sweet!

I bet they could have that thing well over 300hp and 40mpg. Just wonder if the rest of the truck would handle it?

They're just making everyone that has or wants to do a 4bt swap green with envy!

I'm not so sure about the longevity of the newest diesels. When you read the details on this engine, for example, it is being pushed much harder than other diesels in order to produce those numbers. Will an engine pushed that hard really last as long as the old workhorses? Also, will there really be much room for improvement from tuners? We'll find out in a few more years when this Cummins hits the market.

Like I said, it was a few years ago. Your link proves what I said. Thanks.
Apparently you didn't actually click the link as it shows the Dodge RAM as the highest on the American Made list for pickup trucks and not "finishing last". Also, the second link states that the Dodge RAM has 76% Domestic Parts Content which is the highest of the pickup trucks and even the Ford dropped from 75% to 55% and GM trucks dropped from 90% to 75%.
Yes, the Titan only makes 385 FT TQ but anyone who knows anything about trucks knows its not how much HP or TQ you make, its where you make it.
The Titan doesn't make that TQ until 3,400 rpms which is not any better than the others, (the HEMI makes that at 3,000 rpms). The difference is the others keep making power where-as the Titan drops the power like a bad habit. It can't even make it's max 317 HP until a high-revving 5,200 rpms!
Even with the power coming on so late, the Titan rear-ends were failing left and right so hopefully they can put a real rear-end in that truck that can handle diesel torque.

Let's just hope that it (nissan diesel) won't need the vast assortment of Govt, required bullsh!t to make it meet the bullsh!t emmission stds. They put Cat out of the over the road truck engine business, ruined the B 5.9 and killed the 7.3 PS!

Totally agree! Funny how they don't realize that while these newer trucks have 20% cleaner emissions they are also using 30% more fuel at the same time. :mur:

All these things are getting to be more and more mechanically complex to satisfy emissions requirements. The IH 6.9L in the old Ford F250 wasn't nearly as complicated as the later engines. However desirable a diesel may be, you've got to figure that they'll find a way to make it more costly and more complex not because anybody asked for it, but because of the regulations somebody put in place.
