If you owned the place ,and saw what people bring back because they don't know what they are doing ,, You would understand..

I'm surprised they don't stop selling to the do it yourselfer's all together.. You install and electrocute ,or blow yourself up, and they are facing a lawsuit for selling you a product you didn't have the knowledge to install.
Not saying everybody don't knowing what they are doing , but there is a large # of people out there that don't know how to install a ''WATER HEATER'' as us plumbers call them..:D

What if they would not see your tractor or auto parts cause your not a licensed mechanic or work under one? How would you like to be forced to trailer your tractor to a "certified" repair shop. Or what if they would not sell your yard tools cause your not a landscapper with a bisness license,. What about not being about to buy anything but a push mower and a really small rider cause of the same...no rakes or chainsaws for you either, dont forget hedge clippers.

I mean we could use that argunment on basically everything.

You will want to stay out of Mass as well. About 15 years ago I had a dishwasher that in one mode leaked badly. I tried to buy a new dishwasher and the salesman wouldn't sell me one until I could tell him the permit numbers for both plumbing and electrical. The town I lived in required both. It was going to cost me more for permits ($95.00) and contractors ($280.00) than it was for the dishwasher ($230.00)!! I just told my wife not to use the mode that leaked and I didn't replace the dishwasher.

i sure am glad my town has no building codes for crazy scenarios like this

If a store had to get my permit number in order to sell me a water heater, I'd buy it elsewhere. Im sure that was a local govt requirement, store probably hates it.
Course i live within 30 miles of 2 other states.

Yesterday I went to a chain type hair saloon / barber shop against my better judgement. They wanted a phone number "just to keep track" of me. I looked around, saw their number on a business card and gave her that. She rolled her eyes and directed me to the chair.

It's all just another way to "keep track" of you, and for a permit, also just another shakedown.

Ron I have my mixing valve ordered so do not have to worry about burns. It comes set at 120F and expect I may leave it there for the clothes/dish washers.

My question can these fail and let out only hot water or does it default to cold? This is the one I ordered based on reviews. HEATGUARD Thermostatic Mixing Valves TMV HG110D LF w/ 3/4" Sharkbite Ends BNIB

Gale, I am not sure on which way they fail, never seen it happen as I amj not a plumber by trade. The VA system I tested was based on their fetish about Legionella and scalding. The mixing vales were so they could keep the WH temp up past the Legionella kill point. 120 degrees can still cause some bad scalding especially small children. There is a lot on info on both subjects on the web.

Actually, barber shops use your phone number to look up your account when you call in to make an appointment or to reschedule. In my experience they really just want the last four digits and your name. I've never been hassled with marketing calls when I give them the number and it does allow them to identify a customer more efficiently.

My drycleaner does the same thing. Saves me lots of hassle when I lose the slip as they have all the info in their computer.

That might be the case.

Last summer the fan on my central air condenser seized up. First I tried to buy one, no one would sell me one. So I call a local HVAC repair shop. I tell them its seized and I need a new one installed. They tell me they will diagnose it. So the tech shows up, I tell HER it's seized up, just install a new one. Well she gives me the same line about checking it out herself. After a 1/2 hour she comes knocking on the door to tell me I need a new fan that mine is seized up. So I had to pay for something I already new and could have done myself. It was over 500 bucks. What a SCAM!!

They should have just sold you one. But I get why the tech looked for themselves. If they would have just put a fan in based on your recommendation, and that wasn't it, they risk you throwing a fit.

Troubleshooting is always easy looking backwards. The public thinks it all should be easy, though they can't do it themselves. So I agree with the tech checking for themselves.

You could have went on the internet or Grainger, and ordered one. No insurance though.

How many lawsuits were brought against yanmar for people being hurt or killed on 1 of their tractors ??? Many..
work on your car ,and wreck into someone,, they will sue you
Install a gas water heater wrong, blow up your home and your neighbors home and you'll be sued, the wh manufacture will be sued, the gas company will be sued, and the place that sold this person a gas appliance that didn't know what he / were doing will be sued.... Been in the bus a long time.. Have seen it happen..

Saw a shop that sold a person a 4 wheelers get sued when the operator got hurt because they did something stupid.. they also sued the maker of the 4 wheeler..

I don't know of any HVAC supply houses around here that will sell you anything unless you are certified..

Just open an account with Grainger... only need the card to purchase refrigerant.

If you really know what you need... get it online.
