No mo' hard drives

CDRs and DVDRs have a very finite lifespan. They make archival grade discs which they claim will last 100 years but I very highly doubt it. It's quite common to find 15 year old discs that are unreadable - both commercial and home grown. If I had one that was 20 years old I would frankly be surprised if it was completely readable but YMMV.

I've heard horror stories about CD-Rs, but fortunately haven't had any issues with any I've made. I do (did) have a few store-bought music CDs from the early-ish 90s that went bad. Player wouldn't even recognize 'em.

Timely topic. My 2005 build has hit the technological wall. AMD Phenom II X5 1055T will not support TPM module and therefore no W11 for me.
Two channels that helped bring me up to speed is Britec09 channel and jayztwocents channel.
Britect09 has lots of info for the DYI folks.
My WD Black HDD is failing (Data storage only no running apps or OS), new one on the way.
It will get backed up and go into the new build. 2TB for 75 bucks. It's a WD Black 2TB 7200 rpm. This , after one of the two new Sea Gates failed. CRC codes and failed to format due to I/O errors. So DOA out of the box.
The OS will go into the M.2 slot.
This was a learning process. Upgraded old WD (for the OS, as I have two WD installed.
One for OS and for data only) in this old rig with a Crucial 550g SSD and 16g ram and yup works nice but will not run W11.
I pushed W7 up until a month ago when security issues cropped up. So, ah no will not repeat this, when W10 goes away.
Setting up a W11 rig now should take me into the future until the world blows up or what ever happens next....
One tool for checking hard drive is HDDScan, it's free and gives quick diagnostics of condition of unit.
Also if the need to clone one to a new SSD or HDD, Macrium Reflect is free and work great.
Got that reco from both channels.
Jayztwocents is a gamer rig builder but has good tutorials on how to on many topics.
One more vital app for reliability and troubleshooting one's rig is Memtestx86. Free and it will test you ram sticks.
It saved me days of troubleshooting and kept me from using the parts cannon to fix the ancient unit.

Plus for those that are on the fence about upgrades into W10 or W11 Britect09 and others have affiliates with big builders and one can buy a activation key for under 25 bucks from these OEM builders.
Advantages of building your own, is no OEM crap app installed and much more able to upgrade components that are not proprietary.
Looked at AIOs and though they have a niche, wait until memory or hard drive needs attention. HEH....HEH....
Hope this helps out those looking at upgrades or building one.
I did not go water cooled for the CPU.
Clouds? really after all we've been through, global censorship yadi, yadi people still trust the tech giants???? wow....
If ya need back ups, NAS systems are way down....and not subject to covert snooping ,in the clouds....
