Not actually, it's about controlling wheel spin. I have a video somewhere of a jacked up Dmax wit stacks getting tugged around by a All Wheel Drive Volkswagen.

Wheels spin when you lose traction. IMO, If they loaded 600-800 lbs in the back of that D-Max and put it in low, they could have dragged the VW down the street with no problem.
Once wheels are spinning, they have greatly reduced traction compared to when they are static, or turning under control (ie, with full traction). As your comment implies, in a pulling contest, odds are that you lose if you spin tires before your opponent does.
