Well, I have to say that I own an SUV. OK, well I don't think you will see many socer moms driving my 86 Cherokee, with over 220k, but still. Where I am different is that I konw what this thing can, and can not do. I have vary good tires[ in my book more important then 4wd] I know that the 4wd works, AND I know that I can not stop faster then a 2wd. I am not one of the people that flys by on the hiway. Ok I may go a little faster then some, but I also have a lot of experance in the snow. What realy gets me is these people who ride around on almost bould tires. Come on, if you live in the snow belt, you know sooner or later it will snow. You can have a Hummvee, and if it has bad tires you are not going anywere.

I gotta agree w/you Paul.
Its easy to blame the equipment when sometime goes wrong 9 times out of 10,but if the operator uses common sence 9 times out of 10 lot of mishaps wouldn't occur.
What kinda gets me..if the weather nasty some drivers don't leave enough time for traveling..I like that comfort zone and take my time..also when some try or do pass a highway plow..don't they realize the roads when passing a plow truck the roads are nasty ahead. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
My golden rule..if the storm dumping snow stay home,or get that rear bumper pass the mailbox and park it...but not on a stone wall. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
Well got to finish my coffee than shovel the paths, than have another coffee, than do some plow w/the bota...oh did I mention I have to go w/my better half window shopping. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Derek -- Was that a Vermonter who removed his front plate to save the rest of us the embarrassment? /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Among my favorite stuck car in winter experiences was the woman from Baltimore last year who mistook a groomed cross-country ski trail for a back road. She didn't get far in the car, nor when she crawled out the window and tried to walk back to the road in her silk skirt and stiletto heels! Gotta love Stowe; it's such an interesting blend of rural and urban! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

A few years ago, a buddy had been out partying all night and decided to take a short cut home. Down the rail road tracks. He got about a 1/2 mile off the road (and still a mile from home) and came to the trestle. Lucky for him, one of his front tires blew before he got on the bridge. So, now stuck in the snow, he turned on his flashers and laid down for a little nap. About 3:00 in the morning, his brother started pounding on our door asking us to come move the vehicle because it was "stuck on the tracks" and the train wanted to go through. "The tow truck can't get it off", we were told. After some further explaination, we headed out and found a group of about 8 people already there waiting to help. Plus the tow truck driver who was probably getting tired of explaining that tow trucks do NOT carry a half mile of cable and there was NO way he way going down those tracks.

We picked the lightest girl and put her in the driver's seat to hold the front wheels still and the rest of us picked up the vehicle, one end at a time and lifted it off the tracks. The conductor stood with a lantern and when the vehicle cleared the circle of light, it was far enough off.

About a month later I managed to find out what the RAILROAD charged for towing the vehicle back to the main road, about $900.00. They came with a small crane and lifted it onto a flat car.
