Noco Chargers best sale yet

I took advantage of the sale and bought 2 Noco Genius 10's to replace my aging Batteryminders. I was a bit disappointed to find the Noco's won't desulfate and maintain the battery at the same time. There are two different modes for this, whereas the Batteryminder combined the two.

Still good charger / maintainers for the price though, so I won't be returning them.

Interesting.

It does not say which of the 8 charging modes contain this automatic feature.

There is no mention of this "automatic" desulfation in the manual for the Genius 10. It mentions desulfation only in the "Repair" mode, which needs to be selected separately, and takes around 4 hours. It then returns to standby (off) mode when complete. This means the battery can't be left connected in this mode for long term storage.

recovery mode is for extremely damaged batteries. you can look up youtube video's, people show that it does the desluf in the beginning of the charge mode on discharged batteries.

Jump packs are one thing, but don't get rid of all your old chargers.

Some of the new smart chargers are too smart for their own good. If your battery drops down to 6V, then the new chargers can't decide whether to recharge at 6V or 12V. And down to 1V or 2V, and they just refuse to start.

I just got the dumbest wheeled charger I could for that reason. Manual switch & timer, no smart anything. Handy for testing things like motors or using as a power supply. I use smart chargers or maintainers for normal charging or maintaining.

as mentioned earlier the noco, can be overridden regardless of battery voltage.

All but the two oldest of my BatteryMINDer chargers will attempt to charge a 12V battery that has dropped to as low as 3.0 volts. (My oldest, a 20+ year old model 12117 and a 15+ year old model 12248 will not attempt to charge a battery that has fallen below 10.5 V)

I do keep an old "dumb" charger around, and I have a couple of NOCO chargers that will try to charge anything (The NOCO chargers have to be put in a special mode to attempt to charge a battery that has dropped very low.) I'll probably get rid of the dumb charger one of these days, since I have other options.

A 12 V lead-acid battery is considered to be at "full discharge" when it has dropped to 12.0 volts. When battery drops to 10.5 V or lower, there is a good chance the battery has a shorted cell - IF that is the case, the odds of recovering it are close to zero. Leaving a battery in a partially discharged state causes sulfation. The longer it stays there, the worse the sulfation is. It can take a week or two on a charger with a desulfation mode to recover a heavily sulfated battery. (Which is one of the reasons I like the BatteryMINDer chargers: the desulfation mode operated full time. Some other chargers do not desulfate when in Maintenance or "Float" mode.)

I have both, the Boost Plus (GB40) and the newer Boost X (GBX45). Wait for the Boost X to go on sale; it is far superior - for us anyway. I use the Boost Plus on my JD178 sometimes these days. The Boost X will start all cars we have; have not tried it on our truck as yet.
