Noise in Differential, Gear Box, PTO?

<font color="blue"> I checked yesterday, with stethoscope, and noise seemed to be loudest at the center of the transmission gear box, other than at the end of the PTO shaft. Also noticed the noise got louder when BRAKE was pushed. Checked creeper oil and gears, and it was same level as transmission and could not find any metal in box. Following Chips post, I Shifted PTO main in and out of gear several times, and also PTO speed lever. Thinking about TruChaos post, pointed it downhill for a while, then uphill for a while, no change. Then decided to drive it around yard, to see if any change in different gears, PTO in/out etc. AND WHILE DOING SO THE NOISE STOPPED. </font>

Maybe after pulling out your Stethoscope, your Tractor knew, what was coming next, and cured itself, not wanting the dreaded Shot In The RearEnd!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just Joking

It may have been some loose metal material, that got in the bearings, gears,,, etc, etc, etc. Just a guess, but these Chinese Tractors are well known to have lots of loose metal shavings and such, all over the place.

Adjust Her Clutch, and Put that Wild Woman, back to work...

224XR, Chip, Greg, and all the rest of you guys, adjusted the clutch today, and it shifts, gears and PTO better than it did before I broke it. I sure wish I knew what that noise was, maybe it wont come back. This whole thread has seemed like a wild goose chase. I really appreciate everyone's advise and ideas. Without all of you, I would still be standing there staring at it, wondering what the heck to do. Thanks Yall.

One thing I noticed on my 284 while tracking down a noise is that the gears in the main gearbox have a bit of for-aft travel. When I remove the main gearbox cover on mine, I can see the gears slide front to back slightly when the clutch is depressed. The clutch disk is not sliding easilly on the input shaft and as the pressure plate presses against it, the shaft is pulled forward slightly. The noise I had on mine was caused by this and a gear that had a little wobble when rotating. When I let the clutch out in neutral, the gear ws pulled forward slightly and the edge of the teeth on this wobbling gear would just make contact with the edge of the teeth of another gear which caused a thumping/grinding noise with the clutch out in neutral. It was more evident when the gearbox oil was warmer/thinner.

If your noise returns, you can run it with the gearbox top off to watch the gear interactions, just wear old cloths as it will sling a bit of oil and dont have anything in your pockets that can fall out and into the gearbox.
