Noise in Differential, Gear Box, PTO?

Thanks Harry, I would still be pecking if it was not for pic's.

When you push the clutch pedal all the way down .... it stops the input shaft into the trans and input shaft for the PTO.

The lift box and or trans top cover may be the next move to have a look see. I dont think you have a clutch prob.

farmpro/jimma 2420 2cyl. 140 hrs. I was bush hogging today, and a noise developed from what sounded like the rear end, but could be the gear box or somewhere else. It is a grinding noise similar to what you hear when you shift from high low range, and dont quit get it in gear. Or when you engage the PTO, and dont quit get it in gear.

Hey David,

Did you check to make sure that you have oil, in the Creeper Gear Reservoir? Best way is to remove the top cover on the creeper gear reservoir. Just Trying to cover all the bases, for lubrication or lack thereof, since you are not absolutely sure, where the grinding noise is coming from.

Since it is very hard to detect where the noise is coming from, you might get one of the Mechanics StethoScopes, at Harbor Freight. I got one a while back for less than 10 dollars. I don't remember the exact dollar amount, but it was very reasonable. With that instrument, you might be able to isolate, better, where the noise is coming from.

Since you were BushHogging, I am suspecting that some damage may have occurred, in the gearing or associated bearing assembly, for the PTO Gear Trainey. It's just a guess though.

Maybe one of the Professional Mechanics here will be able to help you.

Have a nice day,

I agree with Greg, it seems a bit premature for a throw out bearing. Also, the throw out bearings I've heard fail made some strange noises but grinding isn't one of them.

Since you were using the PTO when the noise started and the PTO is the first thing to engage when the clutch is released which I think you said that's when the noise starts, I would definately play with the PTO engagement lever.

Place the tractor in neutral, clutch out, raise and lower the lever without actually engaging it to see if the noise appears or disappears. Then try the same thing will rolling in gear. Engage and disengage to see if it changes anything.

Check to make sure the lever is actually turning the shaft. If I have the lever down and nearly engaged but not completely, it makes a grinding noise. Especially if my big feet hit the lever while the engine is running.

Good luck

If you disengage the PTO using the lever by your right heel, does the noise go away? If you engage the PTO does it work? both or either speed? If it is the inner (PTO) shaft running against the outer (Main transmission input) shaft, then sometimes overfilling the trans will help. be sure to drain it back down or y ou will get some spillage out the vents.

Chip, with tractor running and gear box in N, I can engage PTO main lever, speed in N, get the noise, put speed in 540 get PTO spin and noise, same with 1000. Will try adding more oil, also as suggested, check creeper, Have a stethascope, but have not tried it yet. Did try to adjust main clutch, 1/2 turn no difference, full turn still noise and clutch slippage. May have adjusted in wrong direction. Returned to original settings no slippage but still have the noise. Got someone to hold clutch in while I walked around, Noise seems to be coming from rear of tractor, under seat or back end cant tell for sure. Hate to spend a lot of time listening while that grinding is going on.

Thanks to ALL for hints and advise, and humor. Cant work on it anymore today, our national bird is starting to come out. Also for anyone's knowledge, dont ever try to work on your tractor when you have parked next to a fire ant mound. Some of you Yankees wont know what thats like, but it aint fun.
