OK, but does the noise go away ehtn the MAIN PTO lever is disengaged? This will telly ou if it is int he trans area in front of the lift box or under the lift box...

Talk about your odd coincidences, my tractor started making the same noise today. I did about two hours of wood chipping using the PTO chipper. Then I hauled about three buckets of wood to a pile.

I drove the tractor to the house and while in the driveway the tractor started making a grinding noise when I released the clutch with the PTO disengaged.

I engaged the PTO and chipper and the noise was still there.

I noticed that I was on an incline so I turned around with the tractor facing down slope and the noise basically went away. I can still hear a slight difference between clutch in and clutch out but it's not grinding.

The noise definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the transmission.

The transmission has plenty of gear oil which is safe for copper and brass.

Chip, the noise does not go away with MAIN PTO lever dis-engaged. It dissappears only when tractor is running, eveything in neutral and clutch not depressed. I did notice yesterday, that if you hold the clutch in for several seconds while everything is in N, the noise starts up until you release the clutch. Then while everything still in N, you get the noise when you depress the clutch 2 or three times, holding it in for only a couple of seconds. Then no noise until you hold it in for several seconds. I also did notice that the PTO while main and speed are dis-engaged, seems to rotate more than it used to, and has a little more power when you put a board on it to completly stop it. Maybe the PTO is not completely dis-engaging, either from the MAIN lever or the SPEED lever. I am about to go check it out with a stethascope and may get a better idea of where the noise is coming from.

Sorry Chaos for your problem. I sure hope this is not a new strain of virus going around.

You haven't set the 1mm gap between the clutch fingers and the bushing face yet - have you Dave?

What you just described will happen when one or more fingers has/have an excessive gap. If the fingers aren't all even, the friction disc and friction plates will not completely separate.

Greg, I checked yesterday, with stethoscope, and noise seemed to be loudest at the center of the transmission gear box, other than at the end of the PTO shaft. Also noticed the noise got louder when BRAKE was pushed. Checked creeper oil and gears, and it was same level as transmission and could not find any metal in box. Following Chips post, I Shifted PTO main in and out of gear several times, and also PTO speed lever. Thinking about TruChaos post, pointed it downhill for a while, then uphill for a while, no change. Then decided to drive it around yard, to see if any change in different gears, PTO in/out etc. AND WHILE DOING SO THE NOISE STOPPED. Put the hog back on and PTO in gear. No noise. Cut some tall grass, changed gears etc, no noise. Did notice, PTO main is now harder to engage, but I think that is due to the clutch not being adjusted as you suggested. Now I wonder what made the noise quit, did something finally break, or grind off? I just Dont know, but have a feeling it had something to do with either the PTO main or speed and may return. Anyway, I will now begin to try to adjust clutch, and see where that goes. Any suggestions appreciated.
