I installed the electric models that Lowe's sells after doing the research on them. I had them in Europe, pretty standard fare since 220 is the norm. I have one in my barn and love it. When running two deep sinks, the shower etc...never a loss for hot water.
wow i looked them up 100-200 amps .is that right?

You may be right, but it's going to bug me enough that I'll need to find out tomrrow:D . I thought most applications were 160 deg. with only a couple of reasons (applications other than actually washing for restaurant cleaning) needing to hit 180.

Actually, thinking about it, if I remember correctly (and I could be totally wrong, which is usually the case), I thought 180 degrees F was for sterilization of some sort (originally thought of something for the hospital, but was wrong on that thought).

Heck with it, I'll call the engineering department tomorrow:p

Sorry Joe, I should have made myself clear.
I'll try clear myself up. The normal temp of commerical dishwashers operate around 160 deg. Booster heaters are added to raise the temp. to around 180-195 deg. durning the rinse cycle for sterilization of the dishes & other items in the dish washer. So, when we eat at a restaurant hopefully all is clean & sanitized so, we don't catch any harnful stuff. But, I go into restaurants to work on these booster heaters that have been down for weeks & the restaurant has not stopped operation because the booster heater is down:eek:

I currently have 2 NG water heaters. A 40 gallon that feeds the hot water needs of the house, and an 80 gallon unit that heats the radiant floors in the basement and the kennel. One thing is the kennel is on the far side of the garage, so the pex is buried in the concrete going through the garage. The result is I ended up with a garage that is also heated where I didn't intend for it. I wasn't there the day they poured the garage concrete so I can tell if the builder did appropriate insulation around the pex, I would guess not. Bottom line is I am always heating 120 gallons of water weather I need it or not. Someday I would like to convert from the 2 water heaters to Tankless. Can it be done in a single unit with 2 zones, 1 for household water and 1 for radiant.

Bottom line, you'll end up talking to a professional plumber, however, with your application, I'd look towards a new high efficient modulating gas boiler for the radiant, and a tankless for your domestic needs.

Kenmac, you're right. Ironic enough, that was one issue I had with a homeowner.

you can heat two zones with a tankless through what they call an open system, so long as you used food grade pex. If it was me I would buy two tankless units, possibly running antifreeze in the kennel unit and regualr water in the house, that way you can let the kennel unit run at a lower temperature without any risk of freezing

wow i looked them up 100-200 amps .is that right?--------------no---at least my little elect one in my barn is on a 50 amp breaker. ...don't even remember the brand right now.

We have had issues trying to use 1 tankless to serve a large houses where hot water is needed on the far end of the house. We ended up installing a 2nd tankless on the far end of the house for hot water. Your distance and hot water needs could be a factor as to weather you'll need 2 water heaters or 1

what type of issue ? water not hot enough for dishwasher?

A homeowner is not likley to get 180 deg water. We now have to install mixing valves to prevent water from being too hot. However, there are some high end home use dishwashers that will heat the water to 180 or so deg. inside the dishwasher

The tankless I use will go to 180 degrees. What the homeowner wants, the homeowner gets... sometimes. Problem with the internet is the homeowner finds something online from a manufacturer, they (homeowner) has a crapload of money, and they think they will get it because thats what they want.

Yes, the homeowner wanted a commercial water heater for her dishwasher (residential) to heat to 180 degrees.

Thanks for the replies. The house is only 3 years old, so I am not ready to pull the trigger yet on either a boiler or tankless. Seems like the technology is changing here pretty quickly on Water heating. I just keep watching.
