Logging crew got me good about 15 years ago. I had quite a bit select cut and they did a good job....but!!! About 2 years after they had left, I was hunting way on the back side down a steep ravine where one of the creeks cuts through and stumbled upon on of their huge/gigantic/skidder tires laying there. They must have replaced it and left me the steaming pile of dog....you know what. Thanks. O the bright side, the EF4 tornado seems to have transferred ownership of said tire to somewhere/someone else in the universe. It's gone, along with many many trees. Oh well, the good with the bad I guess.

The only that works is to have a system that collects a fee when you buy new tires or electronics/electric stuff, and then it's free to recycle when it's worn out.
We pay a fee when we make a new purchase, but apparently it just goes into the vacuum known as "General Fund". I live in a small town, yet the transfer station still doesn't charge for anything. Tires, appliances, et al go to a larger transfer station where they are taken care of and the town is charged accordingly. There also are people who will take the refrigerators, crush them, and mix them with a dump truck load of ""scrap"; but I do try to be environmentally conscious so I get rid of them properly.
One of the parcels we manage is on the town and Washington County line with the highway running through it. There's a snowplow turn around which also serves as the lazy man's dump. Monday night I was driving past and noticed two five gallon buckets had "appeared"; one had hydraulic fluid, while the other had a mix of anti freeze and oil. I called the district forest ranger and left a message, asking for advice on who to call. He said he would send someone out to take care of it, and ask around to see if they could find out who left it.

Here we can deliver a fridge in any shop that sells them new.

I've always been able to turn in my old appliance to the place that I buy the new one at, they even pick it up and take it when they bring the new one.

I agree the expense is one of the reasons people dump stuff, but its not an excuse. I really think its more laziness.

Here's a few experiences I've had that tell's you how the bureaucracy handle's it in Collin County Tx,pop 979k,886 square mile area. My renter called sheriff because people next door dismantled a travel trailer allowing a lot of debris to blow onto her yard. Sheriff said there was nothing they could do about it unless an officer saw it happening. When I called and asked what the 3 deputies we pay to control illegal dumping do all day,I was told they could issue me(the property owner a citation for failure to maintain property. They set up once a month "FREE DISPOSAL DAY" at 5 county road maintainance facilities. They didcontinued it after 2 months because,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they were unable to handle the overwhelming amount of trash! In it's place, county residents can carry trash to landfill once a month. County jail inmates are brought out to assist with unloading and plenty of them volunteer because it's a rare opertunity to smoke. The inmates only unload pick ups,no trailers. When I called to ask why inmates didn't unload trailers, they said something about liability. The inmates aren't busy at all and would jump at the chance to unload anything for tips but the guard will not alow it so they sit and smoke between pick up loads. The shortest time I've spent in line waiting my turn to dump was 1 hour and 45 minutes, the longest 4 hours and 10 minutes. When I chose to go another day and pay, attendant demanded cash deposit(no credit card or check) until I came out and weighed. Deposit was on 5 tons which included weight of a 2 year old F350,dump trailer and trash. Had to turn around and go to ATM for $375 cash. Next time I had $500 cash on me. The 3 deputies that were hired to do nothing but control illegal roadside dumping violations scatched in trailer to find less than a bundle of shingles from a roof repair. Landfill charge's $150 surcharge in addition to regular fee for roofing shingles. I was pleased to hear somebody dumped close to 8 cu yds in private drive leading to a county commissioner's remote parcel of land.

Its not just a rual thing. When I lived near Detroit, I heard a couple stories about suburban contractors just dumping construction waste in empty city lots to avoid dumping fees. I am sure plenty of the locals did it too, but the city vs. suburb mentality blinded those that had to deal with the mess to that posibility.

What kind of people throw beer bottles, animal carcasses, fast-food trash, old clothes, tires, and bags of household trash out of your truck onto random people's property as you go tearing by at full speed on a curvy gravel road?

In the middle of the beautiful mountains (which you should be proud to live in).
When there are county provided dumpsters located conveniently at the side of the road every 5 miles for FREE trash disposal.

Trashy people I guess.

Old furniture and mattresses, etc get dumped around me but nothing with metal. Though metal is down, there are still those who collect it and take it in. What really grinds my backside is the dog (and cat) dumpers. At my last place, I was working close to the road which is a deadend when a Ford Ranger went by that I did not recognize. I did not think much of it at the moment even when the vehicle came back out of the road and blew by me. About two minutes later this little scruffy mutt came running up all out of breath. I soon figured out the stranger's activities. I took the dog in until we could find her a home.

Animal dumping as well as garbage dumping should be a moving offense with points. And, just like Alice's Restaraunt, the perp's should be made to pick up the garbage.

The first big trash problem I saw, or at least can remember, was up in the Kentucky mountains, especially out on fire roads. The amount of trash, tires and appliances was sickening. Which is why the roads got closed down.

People have dumped trash on the property behind ours. I know who did it but can't prove it. They used a tractor to drop off yard waste and it likely took them 30 minutes round trip to dump the trash. We have free trash collection at a dump station in town. There are only two grocery stores in town and the collection center is behind one of the stores. Both stores are close together. It is easy peasy to dump your trash when getting groceries but these morons spent more time illegally dumping the trash than taking care of it properly. What pigs.

We had a contractor in the neighborhood working on someone's house. That pig tossed one bag of garbage down a slope on our land one Friday afternoon. A week or two later he left another bag at the gate. At least that was easy to pick up and I was going to the dump anyway. The B....d tossed another bag WAY into the woods on another property.

Later,
Dan
