As previously stated I was told 85/96 for hardwood/softwood in a wood scaling course years ago- but haven't been able to lay hands on the material, or find it online anywhere since.

More recently I got into the "bigger pile after splitting" discussion... and lost. I stacked a tier of unsplit stove length wood across the pickup bed until it was touching a 2x4 laying across the bed rails. After splitting and restacking it as I normally do I laid the 2x4 across it again; the pile was a couple of inches higher and the 2x4 didn't touch the rails.

Agreed. If I had to pay for it I doubt that I would burn much wood.

I have been in discussions of such and the die hard "smaller after splitting" crowd usually would absolutely refuse to do any of the tests suggested to them.

What a derailment this has become. Think I'll call Zerk and see if he'll give $150 for my "pile of mixed wood mostly round" measuring 50' x 5' x 16". LOL. I'm out.

Just measue it and divde by 128 will give you the cords. 5x50x1.3 = 325 cuft divided by 128 = 2.5 plus a bit cords.

A face cord is a third. Why does it matter if you use a term or a fraction? With money we can call it a quarter or 25 cents, or 2 bits. Can call something 32 ounces or a quart.

We have terms for something, as long as both agree what the terms, does it matter if you use them?

The difference is sthat 1/3 cord is a legal definition. A face cord is not and can be anything. Don't expect to win a legal case based on "face cord" as an amount.

Not it is 3 demensional. length x width to height. Right? We define a cord, a face cord is a 1/3 of that.

Sorry, you won't find any legal description as such. I agree that the local definition is 16" deep but I have seen it argued as other than 16".

The percentage of people that could calculate the volume of a firewood stack are pretty slim. Itç—´ not likely youæ±*e going to stack it in a perfect 4x8 rectangle and cut it in even increments of 48? Youæ±*e going to have calculate the stack in cubic inches and convert it to cubic feet and you probably don稚 have the luxury of calculating a rectangle and will need to calculate the volume of a trapezoid shaped pile. Most people can稚 even do very basic math like counting change or figuring the area of rectangle.

You don't have to convert to inches. 16" is 1.3 feet (close enough) so you can measure a stack in feet and do the whole thing using feet - no onversion necessary. Of course if it is different that 16" in depth you do have to figure the approximate decimal value

And if it’s not a perfect 4x8 stack. Most people stack between trees or barn walls which aren’t 8’ apart and usually stack higher than 4’.

I dunno. Seems there is a definition of face cord. Not sure why people think there isn't. I realize fractions are tough for some people. So the 2nd link gives a dimmension you can use.

What is the difference between a face cord and bush cord of wood?
The most common firewood piece length is 16 inches (41 cm). A face cord is one third of a full or bush cord stack of wood that is 4 by 8 ft (1.22 by 2.44 m) by 16 in (41 cm) and has a volume of 42.6 cubic feet (1.21 m3).

But not a legal definition.

Go on down the page you linked:

Wikipedia: A face cord is an informal unit of volume....

Woodbeaver : A face cord refers to a stack of cut and split firewood 4' high by 8' long by the length of the firewood, usually 16, 20 or 24" ..... (or whatever lengths the cutter choses ?)

Worldforestindustries: The amount of wood in a rick or face cord will depend on how long the pieces are so these are not the most accurate firewood measurements.

If someone needs a 1/3 of a cord around here it's free..

If you don't have 7,8,9,10 cord here you aren't going to make it through winter unless you burn fuel. A small pickup load will cost you nothing here, most people have more than they need so if someone needs a little we give it to them..

Agree sir. I have done that 4 times recently. Three loads went to a widow who lost her husband in the summer. I will not let someone freeze if I can help it.
