Now I have a beaver?

We have beavers that have damned up the spillway, raising the pond by 2 feet. Every few days I knock a hole in their dam and they build it right back. I've eliminated a few but they apparently like my pond. I've noticed that since the pond level went up, a few trees that were near the water line have died.

This weekend we had a massive rain storm and my pond flooded up a bit from all the debris that came down the mountain thru the creek. I got it cleared and the water started to recede a bit. Toward the end of the days I saw a beaver swimming around. It's a massive thing. I got about 10 minutes of video of it swimming around my beautiful pond. I'm worried that it could dig tunnels in the dam and cause the dam to fail. I think I know what has to be done but don't really want to do it. Anyone ever have any success trapping and relocating a beaver?

If only you could have contracted with the beaver to build you a pond before you did all that work yourself...

Just kidding. I don't think the beaver does road work. ;)

I doubt the beaver will harm your dam. Do you have flowing water on your property? I can't recall from your postings.

Check your state law. In Indiana we can "take" beaver any time of year on our own property if they are causing or threatening to cause damage to property. They must be released or euthanized within 24 hours.

threatening to cause damage? Judge that beaver looked at me cross eyed and I was scared he would key my car?

The description of the law says " At present, the owner or tenant of any property may take beaver discovered damaging property without a permit during the closed season."

So it reads that you have to wait for that rodent to cause some damage first. But I can't find a link to the actual law, just the DNR description.

DNR: Beaver

It sounds like you have to discover it doing damage without a permit. If the beaver has a permit, you'd have to leave it continue to do damage. ;)

Better now, before "it" becomes "they".

I had about 6-8 acres of trees flooded and killed before I discovered it/them on my place, I ripped the dam out (and threw a track on the excavator:ashamed:) and they repaired in a day. A trapper got them for me, eventually. The term "busy as a beaver" is not just a good rhyme.

and then there's this

Beavers won't damage your dam, but muskrats surely can and will, they are the ones that burrow

Ill check to see if the beaver has a permit. If not, i will probably ask him nicely to leave.
Mossroad, yes i have a stream that flows in and runs all year long from up the mountain. And when it rain tht stream becomes a torrent because 178 acres drain thru my pond via that stream. A **** upstream could be scary. If it created a large body of water that gave way at once that could overwhelm my **** and spillway. This pond was built 20 years ago by previous owner. It also is my road to my house. There is much to consider.
