Now I have a beaver?

Beavers are nasty! I had to cut down 17 trees that they had either girdled or we're going to, in order to prevent the beavers from dropling these trees and smashing my beautiful old boahouse.

So then they moved into the boathouse complex, and of course started stuffing sticks everywhere underneath. I finally left an LED light on, and some tunes going on the radio. So far so good, but spring is about to come!

Thanks for the link.... shoot it! Just kidding, but at least that one clarifies it.

No problem, but it is directly contradictory to your post from the same government site. So if it were me I'd email DNR to see what the truth is or at least what the CO would enforce. The pond leveler idea sounds better and more perm of a fix though.

In virginia it is pretty clear. Virginia vdgif.
Home>wildlife>nuisance&problem wildlife> Beaver.
.no kill permit required from VDGIF
.Landowner may kill or have killed when causing damage

Im good. And around here gunshots don’t even raise an eyebrow.

They are large rodents. While nice to look at on someone else's property, I sure would not want to take a chance with them on my mine. Like mice or rats, they can multiply quickly and then they are difficult to get back in control. I would follow Clint S's advice above with the three S's.

I have no beaver in this fight....

I have a county drain on my property that averages 6' across and a foot deep that flows year-round. The county comes through and digs/cleans it out about every 5 years or, like this year, after record heavy rains to make sure it flows and doesn't take out the highway. I see occasional beaver chews here and there, along most waterways around here, but never anything else. In fact, the only live beaver I've ever seen around here was sitting on the sidewalk in front of the public library in downtown South Bend, Indiana, about 6 blocks from the river. It was looking kinda googly-eyed and probably was sick or on drugs, so we called the cops and had it arrested.

Where we used to live the beavers damned the spillway:

I would open it up with the backhoe:

The next morning it would be dammed up again:

I put some flex pipe over the sticks and staked down the ends in the water. After a rain the water level would rise and start flowing through the pipes. It would continue to flow until the water level dropped enough to break the siphon. The beavers added to the dam, but didn't figure out how to stop the flow. They finally gave up and moved elsewhere.

I checked first thing this morning and again tonight. I didn't see the beaver or any evidence of it. No trees ringed, nothing. I will be keeping an eye out. I may take a walk tomorrow morning, down below the pond to see if it is doing anything down there. That is all low lying swampy area and could easily be flooded by beaver activity. I don't want that. I like it the way it is.

I have found them to be active just before dusk and into the night.

Your beavers are harder workers then mine!!! On the bigger trees, they just eat off all the bark, all the way around the tree, so it dies. Then they cut down all the saplings and smaller trees up to about 4 inches thick and eat those.
