Dye, tax, but off road has higher sulfur content is the main difference. if the engine runs ok you may have problems later, including the dpf filter. I would follow Mfg instructions

No, that is false -- off road is exactly the same as pump diesel, but with dye added and no tax. Sulfur content is the same (has to be, it's the law).

Here its the same apart from the dye that's added red diesel its called, and you pay more for white diesel for road use (and that is down to tax) and I can't see a dye making any difference in the sulfur content.

Not here.
Buddy just got an $800 fine for using 'off road' on his private property in his tractor. (not even plated for road use)
In Quebec they call it 'stationary' rather than off road and only a generator is exempt.

He had a partial building fire and the insurance ordered him to empty the fuel oil tank to avoid spillage.
Where else but to use it in his tractor.

If this is true as you understand it, I would go to court with it. It's more like they knew he had to empty his home heating oil and was watching him, and gave him a ticket for using home heating oil in his tractor. You say only a generator is exempt. I can't see canada even making off road just for a generator. It also sounds like someone had it in for him.

Make sure it's not Bio-diesel. Dealer told me it will screw up a teir 4 engine.

That is horse hockey also. Most truck stop chains have biodiesel blends now, with no choice for non biodiesel. The current crop of on road highway engines with their Tier 4 compliance (since 2010) have been running the stuff every day, all day, all year, for a few years now. Every brand of engine and displacement in every commercial truck. Bio blends from B2 thru B15 on a regular basis. Not documented as causing problems with engines or after treatment emissions junk. Dealers are not noted for their broad base expertise in such subjects. Can't speak to all tractor brands, but NH, Case, and John Deere all advocate using bio.

Could well be as he won a court case involving the environment.*
He was hand delivered a summons for a $60K fine on a Thursday and won that same case in court following Tuesday as they dropped the case.
Lawyers won.

* however Environment and Revenue are 2 completely different departments.
We have a dept that solely checks fuel taxation here. They certify pump meters and spot check heavy trucks for fuel colorant.
They also have portable scales to assure proper plates are paid for and weight restrictions are complied with.
Naturally it is all about safety and not tax grabs.

We all know that heating oil and off road is the same thing.
I suspect generators are exempt mainly because our state Hydro is obliged to provide generator powered electricity in many remote northern communities.
Even bulldozers and excavators pay the road taxes here.

The off-road diesel sold in my neighborhood is home heating fuel oil that still has the high sulfur content. I think it is that way in most places. Any diesel will run just fine on it and, in fact, has a lubricating quality that ULSD does not. Keep in mind however that if you are not using ULSD, Kubota recommends that you change your oil at half the stated interval.

I drive an oil truck in the winter for a friend , They have 4 tanks at the terminal , high sulfer diesel , low sulfur diesel and ultra low sulfur diesel , and the dye tank . They add the dye at the fill pump , if its taxed for on road , no dye , off road and heating oil is dyed . The fuel is the same dyed on not .

#1diesel and #2 diesel . . . Do they have a difference in sulfur content?

New thought: I was talking to a sealership salesman relating to my search for a scut. I asked if they use winteriser in their display equipments' tanks in the winter . . . And he suggested its much easier to use #1 all the time . . . I was a little confused by that because truckers don't use #1.
