What's wrong? Things are going as expected; got the serial numbers and am moving closer to the big day.

Funny story, though. When I called the dealer and was explaining to the woman who answered the phone what I needed, I heard shrieking in the background. At ony 8:30 a.m., I thought it was a little early for the party to be starting. Turns out at that moment a 6 foot blacksnake slithered into the office area and the women in the office were a bit alarmed! My salesman told me later he wanted to take the snake home to his haybarn for mice.

I'm making progress....

Rancar, you'll appreciate this part of the story. He'd originally priced it to me $500 higher. I told him I didn't want and would never use a backhoe (and honestly believed that). I asked if I could just buy the tractor and loader (without the backhoe) so he discounted it that $500 for the backhoe.

While I didn't want it, I thought it was probably worth $500 so I went to my Deere dealer and asked the price of one and almost fell over./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I called him immediately to close the deal with the backhoe at the higher price but he interrupted me to tell me I could have it for the same $500 less WITH the backhoe "because nobody would buy the backhoe without the tractor."

Of course, now that I have it, I've used the backhoe more than anything else. What a great tool they are! I've done everything from digging out stumps to using it to load and unload my trailer. The only thing I haven't done with it is actually dig a hole. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I guess he's right when he says this but it's likely he was thinking nobody would want it without HIS tractor. I guess he never thought there were potential buyers out there who had their own tractors and were seeking BH's like this. Like I said, you hit a winner when you discovered this deal. Thanks, Gary. I have been doing that too, but so far, no luck. When I say that I'll have to wait 2 - 3 years, that's the maximum time period. I'm obviously hoping that either I'll run across the kind of deal you did (wanna come up here and work for me for awhile?) or my financial picture improves a little faster than I expect.

I'll keep looking and talking. Good deals do come along every now and then. My truck dealer called a couple of weeks ago. My lease on my truck runs out this fall, but he wanted to know if I wanted to get my new truck now for just $0.17 more a month! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif I asked him why he wasn't standing at my desk with the papers right now! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Just to make sure we're all on the same page here, I did NOT buy my Deere 4200 for $5,500. I traded two trucks AND $5,500 for it. I'm sorry if anyone read my post and didn't catch that.

As I re-read posts by Rancar and John Miller, III tonight, I noticed the $5,500 was mentioned as though it was the only consideration given. It was not. The retail value of the two trucks certainly exceeded $5,000. That puts me into five figures for the tractor. A great deal, to be sure, but not anywhere near buying the unit for $5,500 total.

While I clearly noted the trades in my first post here, maybe I should have listed values for them and given a total value for the transaction rather than just mentioning the trade difference. Obviously, I wish now that I had done that.

I certainly didn't mean to mislead anyone here. Again, my apologies for any misunderstandings.

No need to apologize. I was cognizant of the 2 pick ups you traded and their relative value as I have a 1989 Silverado I'm trying to sell...Kelly Blue Book tells me I could get about $2,700 from a private party. I'm estimating your two vehicles are similarly valued. So, $11-12K for the tractor package still sounds like a good deal considering the attachments you also got with it. Just that back hoe if purchased new is about $6,500-7,000.

So, I still take my hat off to you as one of the best deal-makers here at TBN. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

… a real rough old 88 Bronco four speed 4x4 and a rough 88 Siverado six cylinder PU…The retail value of the two trucks certainly exceeded $5,000...

No offense… but 1988 “good” condition units may command $1200-1500 each… a 6 cylinder truck is questionable or roll of the dice… but rough condition is more like worthless or a few hundred dollars total… /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

It sounds like, the guy made a quick $500. and then got a couple poor condition trucks he could possibly “unload” for another few hundred dollars to someone… the bottom line… everybody was happy with the transaction… so it actually doesn’t matter now… /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'd love to take credit for this, but, honestly, I just kind of stood there and let it happen. I think this might lend credence to some old adages.

First, for me almost NOT taking the BH and him pretty much forcing it on me? "Two fools met there."

And, for the deal I got? "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart."

Because I literally asked everyone I spoke with for over a year about tractors for sale? "Persistence pays off," or maybe, "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

Finally, given my total lack of knowledge as to what I was doing making this deal, "Even a blind hog stumbles over an acorn once in a while." /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

But enough about my now-old technology and relatively underpowered 4200. What's the latest with the subject of this thread- the new 4310?

None, taken... I ran those two trucks through a dealer only wholesale auction that very Thursday and turned down $4,000 for the pair when this guy had offered me the deal on the tractor.

It's like you said, everybody was happy and that's what's important./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Now I'd be happy if BlurryBill would post some pics of his Goldens (with or without his new 4310). I'm not sure which of those make me more jealous... OK, yes I do... It's the dogs!
