OH POO! What did I do?

Yes the blades will turn for a minute or so after you turn the cutter off, has nothing to do with the clutch.

If you can get the shaft i think you could get it done for half the cost of a new one?

Here is a question, how handy are you? CAn you cut and weld metal, take things apart?

Also does anyone know if the cheaper gearboxes from Ag supply will fit? You can get a 40HP gear box for $120 in store or shipped(obviously plus shipping). This would be the cheapest solution. The picture of them on the catalouge looks just like the one on my Jbar BH. They are shear pin boxes. If they wont fit and you can weld or have some one who can you can make it fit!

Another good idea ... gear box for $120 ... with a torch and a welder it will match up.

I've heard of the weak Spain/Brazil gearboxes before, also. I would let your local JD dealer know about what happened before I bought anything. Tell the JD dealer that- It's a wonder it's not a class action lawsuit due to the nature of things flying out from the bushhog and the liability that goes with it.

Why can't the OP tear the gear box down, order the new shaft and put it back together?

Okay ... when I looked them up on the John Deere Parts Catalog they where there ... of course that don't mean they have them!!!

I tried to add the parts to the cart -- it bounces to the "see your local dealer" page. That and the last time a person tried to get that exact part, it was no longer serviced indicates that maybe they don't support it. But, things change and maybe they got a batch in of the old style that isn't cra...ah ah ah p po po .. poor quality. Whew, almost slipped:laughing:

If you google up "john deere mx gear box" and you will find a LOT of posts on the issue and the dealer solution is to either buy a new unit for $3000 or a new style blade holder and gear box for 1500+.

Heck the cost of the repair will exceed the cost of a medium duty king kutter.

I've never had very good luck "adding to the cart" so I usually call the dealer. And yes I agree at the $3K and the $1500 ... well you can get 2 KK for $1500... I think.

Well, you did hit a stump....and you didn't adjust the slip clutch, so I doubt you'd get any recourse from the dealer or Deere anyway. This, obviously, wasn't a warranty issue. That's even if the design wasn't as robust as it could have been.
If your dealer is still selling tractors and he still has a service department, he may be willing and able to do the repair since it's apparent you don't have the tools and possibly not the skills either.
Or, just start looking for another cutter...

Just remember, it could have been worse...that shock load could have been transmited to the tractor and you'd really be looking at big bucks!
