jinma 284
Hi guys, I'm a long time forum watcher and first time poster.

I'm a happy new owner of a 2011 jinma 284 that just rolled around for the first 50 hour oil change. So I go and drain the oil, change the filter and get my large funnel out and start adding oil. First thing I notice the valve cover fills up with oil and runs over, so I wait awhile and keep adding oil as it drains into the crankcase. At 4 quarts I decided to check the oil level and it showed a little high so decided to try and start the engine. It would not turn over as if in a hydro lock situation.

I did some checking and I think oil could have run from the top of the valve cover through the crankcase ventilation hose into the intake manifold straight into the engine.

Has anyone experienced this and what's the easiest way of clearing a hydro lock.

Hi,

there will be some responses for the oil fill issue. When I tipped my DF a few year ago I got oil in the cylinders and had the hydro lock. Ronald from Ranchhand suggested pulling the glowplugs and cranking it over to blow it out. I did it by hand first and removed most of the oil, replaced the GP's , turned it over and after lots of smoke to blow off ran with no issues. No problems since.

Heres the thread detailing it

Hope it helps

Pulling the glow plugs worked great worked 6T, thanks for the help.

I probably should have followed your advice to the t, but being the lazy guy I am.
I just pulled the glow plugs then laid a rag across the head to catch any oil. When I cranked it over it blew the rag off and shot oil all over my cowling and engine. Spent more time cleaning up the mess then fixing the problem. It then started with a lot of smoke and seems to be ok.

Again thanks

Next time try removing dipstick before adding oil, this will help with the flow, it vents the crankcase, try a smaller funnel also.

You gotta be carefull using the starter in that situation. The oil dosn't pass thru the small hole all that easilly, and can still hydraulically lock the engine, at least momentarilly. This can lead to the starter causing the crank to twist, or the rods to deform or bend, or the head or headgasket being compromised. not to mention all this stress is occuring without any oil pressure on the bearings... Best to use a wrench to rotate the crank slowly to lift the oil up and out, then while the piston is at TDC, you can suck out most all the remaining oil with a syringe and small tube down thru the glowplug hole. My 05 has the vent connected to the oil filler cap, so it is not possible for this to happen while filling, but the oil drains down into the crankcase in the same slow fashion. Mine also has a compression release/decompressor that allows me to spin up the engine with the valves open and no compression, build oil pressure and make sure all the cylinders are clear of oil or water before compression is applied. I use mine every startup as it saves wear and tear on the starter(gets up to speed with way less load and electrical current draw) and also the main bearings by allowing oil pressure to build before compression loads are applied to the bearings. Your engine may have one also, it is just not connected to a linkage that allows you to activate it from the drivers seat. Look on the back end of the valve cover for a rod and plate that sticks out to the rear. Rotating that plate moves cams that open the exhaust valves and prevents compression from building untill it is released to return to it's normal position. It is also an alternate method of shutting off the engine in case of a runaway...

Don't you have an oil fill on the left front of the engine?

This is why I haunt this forum because of all the good advice.
Yes it was my mistake in putting the oil too fast, I felt like I have dodged a bullet here, next time I will watch it.
I did notice there was a lever on the back of the valve cover and wasn't sure what it was for. Is there a cable kit a person can buy so you can use the compression release? I will look for the oil fill on the side of the engine but I don't remember seeing one.

Thanks again guys

Don't look too hard, you may not have one there, but I think there are alternate places to add oil.

That level is for decompress, used during starting. It is not installed on shuttle shift transmissions. Supposedly cause there's not enough room for the linkage. I ordered the linkage and was able to install it on my 2007 Jinma 284. You can probably order the parts thru Affordable or Ranch Hand. On the oil issue, the later model engines take considerable time for the oil to drain thru the oil ports under the valve cover.
